The Hatred Of Envy

“Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”

Envy is one of the most corrosive emotions in the human heart. Joseph’s story shows us how envy can poison relationships: his brothers couldn’t even bring themselves to speak kindly to him. Bob Sorge once called envy “the most common problem that no one admits to.” We pretend it doesn’t exist in us, but it often lurks beneath the surface.

Think about the world we live in. Scroll through Instagram, and you’ll see curated, polished versions of people’s lives. We know they aren’t real, yet something in us feels that dig of irritation: “They look better… have more fun… more money… more popularity…” That’s envy whispering in our hearts. It often targets people who are like us, but who seem to have what we wish we had.

The result? Just like Joseph’s brothers, envy can twist irritation into dislike, or even hatred. Our culture is built on systems that stir envy—advertising, social media, constant comparisons. Unless we deal with it, envy corrodes our soul.

So how do we fight it?

First, deal with the envy in you. Bring it into the light. Laugh at it. Admit it: “Oh, I’m envious of you!” When we confess it, it loses power. Remember: there is no perfect life. No one’s life is as glamorous as their posts suggest. Even the wealthy and successful confess to deep dissatisfaction. Envy tells lies; joy is found not in more, but in contentment. Sometimes this means cutting off the fuel—less Instagram, more Scripture.

Second, deal with envy directed at you. Have you noticed those thorny comments from friends or colleagues? Little digs, competitive remarks? Often envy is behind them. You don’t need to fight or “win” against it. Sometimes gentle boundaries or refusing to play the competition game are enough. Guard your peace without feeding the rivalry.

Envy thrives in the dark but withers in the light. Put to death envy in you, and wisely manage envy around you. For, as James writes, “Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16). But where envy dies, love, joy, and freedom are born.

Reflection: Where have you felt envy’s “dig” in your soul recently? How can you bring it into the light today?

I declare that envy has no hold on my heart. I will not look at what others have with jealousy, but I will rejoice in God’s blessings for them and trust His perfect plan for me. For it is written, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud” (1 Corinthians 13:4).

I fix my eyes not on comparison but on Christ, who is my portion and inheritance. “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). I choose peace, gratitude, and contentment in all things. I am complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10) and lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10). My identity, my calling, and my joy come from the Lord alone.

Today, I walk in freedom, love, and thanksgiving, celebrating the goodness of God in my life and in the lives of others.
