El Bethel: The God of the House of God

“There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.”

Genesis 35:7 NIVUK

Jacob’s life was marked by encounters with God at significant places. Each encounter shaped him, drawing him deeper into maturity. His journey took him from Bethel, to Peniel, and finally to El Bethel. Each stage represents not only Jacob’s growth but also the stages of our own walk with God.

1. Bethel – The House of God
Jacob’s first encounter with God was at Bethel. Exhausted and on the run, he lay down with a stone for a pillow and dreamt of a ladder reaching to heaven. He awoke in awe, declaring, “This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:17). But notice Jacob’s response—it was transactional: “If God will be with me… then the Lord will be my God, and… I will give you a tenth” (Genesis 28:20–22).

This is often where our spiritual journeys begin. We encounter God in His house, the church. We’re drawn by the singing, the sermons, the sense of God’s presence among His people. But like Jacob, our early faith can be immature. We love the blessings of God, but our worship may still be laced with self-interest: If God blesses me, I’ll serve Him.

Bethel is important—it introduces us to the reality of God. But it’s only the beginning.

2. Peniel – The Face of God
Years later, Jacob found himself at Peniel, wrestling through the night with a mysterious man—God Himself. This was no longer about ladders and dreams; it was a face-to-face encounter. Jacob refused to let go until God blessed him. In the struggle, he was wounded, left with a limp that marked him for life.

Here Jacob’s faith deepened. No longer bargaining, he was broken. No longer arrogant, he was humbled. His limp testified that he had encountered God personally.

This is the next stage of growth for us. We move from the house of God to the face of God. We discover that Christianity is not just about church services—it’s about a living, personal relationship with the Lord. We wrestle with Him in prayer, in surrender, in life’s crises. And though we may limp away, we are changed for the better.

But even Peniel is not the final destination.

3. El Bethel – The God of the House of God
In Genesis 35, Jacob returned to Bethel. But this time, it wasn’t just Bethel—it became El Bethel, “the God of the house of God.” Jacob no longer revered only the place, or only the personal encounter—he had matured enough to see both together. The God he met personally was the same God who dwelt in the house of His people.

This is spiritual maturity: to hold together love for God and love for His house. Many stop short here. They love Jesus but grow cynical toward the church. They wrestle with God privately but give up on His people publicly. Yet Jacob’s story reminds us—maturity is found in El Bethel, where God and His house are joined.

The church is imperfect, just like Jacob’s family was. We are flawed, sometimes frustrating, even hypocritical. But by grace, we are still God’s house. And there is something missing when we try to enjoy a fruitful life with God apart from His people.

Keep Progressing
From Bethel to Peniel to El Bethel—this was Jacob’s journey, and it must be ours too. Don’t camp forever in the excitement of early faith. Don’t settle only for private encounters with God. Press on to maturity, where the God you love is inseparable from the house He inhabits.

Lose the cynicism, shake off the skepticism, and rediscover the joy of serving both God and His people. El Bethel is where faith finds its fullest expression.
