The End of Fig Leaves
โImmediately, their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked, vulnerable, and ashamed; so they sewed fig leaves together for coverings.โ (Genesis 3:7, TPT)
The first response to sin wasnโt rebellion or defianceโit was shame. Adam and Eveโs innocence was shattered, and suddenly they saw their weakness. Their instinct was to cover up. Humanity has been sewing fig leaves ever since.
Fig leaves today look like image management and self-protection. We hide behind impressive rรฉsumรฉs, curated social media profiles, polished words, name-dropping, bigger houses, flashier cars, or exaggerated stories. We can even cover with busyness, religion, or endless self-improvement. Anything to avoid being seen as weak, flawed, or needy.
But the gospel tells a different story. Jesus came not to improve our fig leaves but to clothe us in His righteousness. We are loved not because we are impressive but because we are forgiven. Paul could say, โI will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christโs power may rest on meโ (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Christian should be the most authentic person on earthโhonest about weakness, but radiant with grace.
When you know youโre loved by God, you no longer need to exaggerate, pretend, or hide. You can drop the mask, breathe deeply, and be at peace. You can rest in the truth:ย I am weak, but I am forgiven. I am vulnerable, but I am precious. I am seen, and I am loved.
Prayer:ย Lord, forgive me for covering myself with false images and masks. Thank You for clothing me with Your righteousness. Help me live authentically, glorying in Your mercy and grace, at peace with You and with myself.

I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ, not by my own works, for it is written: โHe has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of His righteousnessโ (Isaiah 61:10).
I no longer carry the shame of sin, for Jesus became sin for me, so that in Him I might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). I put off the old self and put on the new, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24).
I walk as one washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 6:11).
