When It Looks Good but Isn’t
“When the woman saw that the tree produced delicious fruit, delightful to look upon, and desirable to give one insight, she took its fruit and ate it. She gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he also ate it.” (Genesis 3:6, TPT)
The first sin didn’t begin with something ugly or obviously evil. It began with something beautiful. The fruit looked good, desirable, even insightful. Yet it was forbidden. The lesson is clear: not everything that looks good is good for you.
Life is full of things that glitter but aren’t gold. Some are obvious: lust, greed, gluttony, hatred, drunkenness. Others are subtler and personal. God sometimes places unique boundaries around our lives for our good. Maybe He’s told you to limit social media, avoid certain shows, step back from a hobby, or restrain spending. What isn’t sin for someone else might be a trap for you.
The Apostle Paul teaches this principle in 1 Corinthians 8–10: our conscience matters. For some, wine is a gift; for others, it’s a danger. For some, entertainment is harmless; for others, it dulls their spirit. The key is listening to the Holy Spirit and honouring His voice.
It’s easy to envy others or judge their freedoms. But wisdom is knowing your limits and not forcing them on others. The flashy car, the curated Instagram life, the endless pursuit of image and status—none of these satisfy the soul.
What “fruit” looks good to you but is off-limits because it pulls your heart away from God? Trust that His “no” is for your protection, not your restriction.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to hear Your voice and follow Your boundaries. Help me resist what looks good but leads to harm, and delight in what truly satisfies.

I will not be led astray by what is pleasing to the eye or desirable to my flesh, as Eve was in the garden (Genesis 3:6). Instead, I will live by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
I will resist the schemes of the enemy, standing firm in faith (Ephesians 6:11, 1 Peter 5:9). I will not exchange God’s truth for a lie (Romans 1:25), but I will delight in His Word, hiding it in my heart so that I may not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11). I walk by the Spirit, and I will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
