When Survival Becomes Your Identity
โAbove all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.โ โ Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
One of the greatest challenges in life is recognising the difference between who we are and how we survived.
Many of the behaviours we struggle with today were not originally weaknesses. They were adaptations.
They helped us survive.
Some people learned to fight.
Some learned to run.
Some learned to hide.
Some learned to please.
These responses often emerged because life became difficult, painful, unpredictable or overwhelming.
The problem is not that we developed survival strategies.
The problem comes when survival strategies become identities.
The fighter begins to believe, โI must always be strong.โ
The runner believes, โI must keep achieving.โ
The freezer believes, โItโs safer not to engage.โ
The pleaser believes, โI only matter when everyone else is happy.โ
What once protected us begins controlling us.
Trauma often leaves people living from protection rather than purpose.
Instead of asking, โWhat has God called me to do?โ we begin asking, โWhat do I need to do to stay safe?โ
Yet Jesus did not die merely to help us survive. He came to restore us to life.
The Lord never intended your personality to be governed by old wounds. He created you for freedom.
This doesnโt mean denying your past. It doesnโt mean pretending difficult things never happened.
It means recognising that your trauma is part of your story, but it is not your identity.
You are not your fear.
You are not your disappointment.
You are not your defence mechanisms.
You are not your survival strategy.
You are a son or daughter of God.
And as the Lord heals us, He gently separates our true identity from the coping mechanisms we built along the way.
Healing often begins when we stop asking, โWhatโs wrong with me?โ and start asking, โWhat happened to me, and what is God restoring in me?โ
The answer may surprise you.
Because beneath the fear, the striving, the hiding or the pleasing, there is still the person God created you to be.
And He is faithfully calling that person back into the light.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I am a child of God (John 1:12). I have not received a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). God is renewing my mind day by day (Romans 12:2). My identity is found in Christ alone (Galatians 2:20). I am Godโs workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10). Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17).

STRONGER: includes a 40 day devotional
This book is all about where we find strength. Jarrod writes that โGod provides us with strength builders along our pathโ โ some we need to pick up and use, others will simply happen to us along the way, by a kind of divine providence. But knowing these seasons of muscle building are from heaven (โcos they usually look like theyโre from hell at first!) is vital to recognising Godโs plan for your resilience.
Now STRONGER comes with an additional 40 day devotional taking you on a journey building attitudes and beliefs that will release divine wisdom and strength in your life. Each day presents you with a scripture, an inspirational short piece to get you thinking, followed by a prayer, action point or declaration.
