When Striving Ends, Glory Begins
โDoes God give you His Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?โ โ Galatians 3:5
The Exhaustion of Striving
There is a quiet exhaustion that sits beneath much of modern Christianity. It doesnโt always look like burnout on the surfaceโoften it looks like commitment, discipline, even devotion. But underneath, there is a subtle pressure to perform, to improve, to become worthy of what God has already given.
Paul cuts straight through that illusion with a piercing question: *Does God move among you because you work, or because you believe?* (Galatians 3:5).
The answer reshapes everything.
Two Altars
Every believer, whether they realise it or not, is building on one of two altars.
One is the altar of strivingโwhere we bring our effort, our discipline, our attempts to be better, hoping that somehow it will produce the presence of God. It feels spiritual, but it is exhausting. It produces moments of pride when we succeed and waves of shame when we fail.
The other is the altar of graceโwhere we bring nothing but faith in what Jesus has already done. It is here, at the mercy seat, that blood speaks louder than performance. It is here that we stop trying to earn what can only be received.
And it is only this altar that hosts glory.
Where Glory Truly Rests
In the Old Testament, the glory of God rested upon the mercy seatโthe place where blood was applied. Not on human achievement. Not on perfect obedience. But on sacrifice.
This was always pointing forward.
Now, through the cross, we approach not with fear, but with confidence. *โLet us then approach Godโs throne of grace with confidenceโฆโ* (Hebrews 4:16). Not because we have done enough, but because Jesus has done everything.
Striving produces fading glory. 2 Corinthians 3 tells us that!
But grace produces increasing glory.
The Posture of Rest
Hebrews speaks of a Sabbath rest that remains for the people of Godโa rest that is not about inactivity, but about posture (Hebrews 4:9โ11). It is the inner settling of the soul that says, โI am already accepted. I am already loved. I am already made right.โ
From that place, everything changes.
Prayer becomes connection, not duty.
Worship becomes overflow, not effort.
Obedience becomes response, not pressure.
And the presence of God begins to feel natural again.
Return to the Altar of Mercy
If you have been strivingโquietly trying to measure up, to improve yourself into breakthroughโthen the invitation is simple: return to the altar.
Not with effort.
With faith.
Lay down the need to perform. Lay down the pressure to become. Come again to the place where mercy speaks, where grace flows, where God meets you not as a project to fix, but as a son or daughter to embrace.
Because when grace is truly receivedโฆ
glory begins to rest.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I receive the Spirit of God by faith and not by works, and He moves powerfully in my life (Galatians 3:5). I come boldly to the throne of grace and receive mercy and help in every moment of need (Hebrews 4:16). I have entered Godโs rest and no longer strive to earn what Jesus has already secured (Hebrews 4:10). I am justified, made righteous, and fully accepted in Christ (Romans 5:1). The glory of God rests upon my life as I walk in grace and faith (2 Corinthians 3:18). I am not striving to be lovedโI am already deeply loved by God (Ephesians 2:8โ9).
