When Prayer Needs A Deeper Key
โThe disciples asked Him privately, โWhy couldnโt we drive it out?โ
He replied, โThis kind can come out only by prayer and fasting.โโ
โ Mark 9:28โ29 (NKJV)
There are some things in life that simply will not budge until fasting is added to prayer.
In todayโs passage, the disciples are frustrated, confused, and a little shaken. These are not rookies. They have already been sent out by Jesus, casting out demons and healing the sick by the authority He gave them (Luke 9:1โ2). Yet here they stand, face-to-face with a young boy in deep spiritual torment, and nothing is shifting. They pray. They command. They believe. Stillโstuck.
Ever been there?
A chronic physical condition that refuses to lift. A long-term delay where you feel like youโre walking in circles. A work situation that never seems to change. A burden for a family member that weighs heavier with every passing year. Youโve prayed about it so many times that part of you wonders whether the silence itself is the answer.
Sometimes people slip into a quiet resignation: โWell, it must be Godโs will.โ As if unanswered prayer is proof that heaven has closed the case. But Jesusโ response to the disciples suggests something very different. Sometimes the resistance is not a signal to give upโbut an invitation to go deeper.
When Resistance Is a Call, Not a Conclusion
Itโs probably above our pay grade to fully understand why some battles require more spiritual engagement than others. Scripture makes it clear that not all opposition is of the same calibre (Ephesians 6:12). There are different levels of demonic resistance, different kinds of bondage, and different depths to which fear, lies, sin, or trauma can root themselves in hearts and minds. Some things donโt respond to surface-level faith. They require a deeper surrender.
Thatโs where fasting comes in.
Fasting is not about impressing God or twisting His arm. It is about recalibrating us. When we voluntarily deny the flesh, the spirit comes into sharper focus. As Jesus taught, โThe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weakโ (Matthew 26:41). Fasting exposes the flesh and sharpens the spiritual man. It quietens the noise, heightens discernment, and releases a clarity of authority that prayer alone sometimes doesnโt access.
Fasting can look different for different people. For some, it may mean fluids only for a day or more (within medical wisdom). For others, a partial or Daniel-style fastโsetting aside rich foods and living simply (Daniel 10:2โ3) is useful, especially if your work requires requires physical strength. And for those who cannot change diet, fasting from things the flesh clings toโsocial media, entertainment, constant noiseโcan still produce profound spiritual focus. The principle is the same: less of self, more of God.
Authority Is Often Unlocked Before It Is Displayed
I remember a long season when our church looked healthy on the surface but felt stuck underneath. For over a decade, the promise of God and the reality we were living in simply didnโt align. For me, there was a persistent sense that something was โoffโ.
Ten years in, Iโd had enough: I fasted and prayedโweeks at a time. Nothing. Months later, I fasted again. Still nothing. But I knew it had to shift, even if the thing God needed to change was me. On the third prolonged fast in one year, the unseen began to surface. Hidden spiritual resistance was exposed. Motives were revealed. Demonic things uncovered. Unhealthy dynamics unmasked. It was extremely uncomfortableโbut very cleansing.
But hereโs the amazing thing; the very week the cleansing reached its conclusion, a huge miracle we had been waiting for over ten years suddenly unfolded with astonishing ease. A property breakthrough that had resisted every effort came together swiftly, freely, and miraculously. God did it. God paid for it. God accelerated it. We were on the move with God!
And it all started when persistent fasting was added to fervent prayer.
We were never meant to live by the theology of โQue sera, sera.โ If itโs happening, it must be Godโs will. That thinking drains prayer of its power and makes a mockery of the authority Jesus entrusted to us. We are called to partner with heavenโto see Godโs will done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
So if something in your life refuses to move, donโt quit. Donโt settle. Donโt resign. Like Jesus, add fasting to your prayerโand watch heaven blaze into those stubborn places. Thatโs how kings live, under the King of kings.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I declare that through prayer and fasting I walk in increased spiritual authority (Mark 9:29). I confess that every stubborn resistance against Godโs will in my life is being broken (2 Corinthians 10:4). I believe that as I humble myself before the Lord, He lifts me into victory (James 4:10). I declare that my flesh no longer rules me, but the Spirit gives me life and peace (Romans 8:6). I confess that the Kingdom of God is advancing through my obedience (Matthew 6:10). I believe that what has been delayed is now being released in Godโs perfect timing (Habakkuk 2:3).
