Watch The Gateways
“So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.” — Proverbs 4:23 (TPT)
Guard Your Heart — Part 2
Yesterday we looked at Proverbs 4:21–22 and the importance of filling our thoughts with God’s Word until it penetrates deep into our spirit. Today, we come to one of the most important instructions in this passage:
“Above all, guard the affections of your heart” Proverbs 4:23 (TPT)
Why is this so important?
Because your heart is more than simply your emotions. In Scripture, the heart speaks of the inner person—the place where our thoughts, desires, attitudes, motivations and decisions are formed.
And what happens in our heart eventually finds its way into our lives.
What Flows From You?
Proverbs describes the heart as a “wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23, TPT).
Think about a spring. Whatever is flowing out of the spring comes from somewhere underneath the surface.
You can hide what’s happening inside for a while. You can put on a smile and tell everyone you’re fine. You can say the right things and maintain the appearance that everything is okay. But eventually, what’s happening within us tends to flow out of us.
Jesus said,
“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34 ESV).
Our words, reactions, attitudes, relationships and choices can reveal what has been taking root inside us. That’s why Scripture says above all else, guard your heart.
Guard the Gateways
One of the ways we guard our hearts is by paying attention to the gateways through which influences enter our lives.
Guard your eyes.
What are you watching? What are you consuming on television, social media, the internet, films, books and magazines?
Jesus said,
“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light” Matthew 6:22 (NLT)
What we continually look at can shape what we continually think about.
Guard your ears.
What voices are you allowing to speak into your life? What conversations are you repeatedly listening to? Is it gossip, cynicism, constant criticism, profanity or fear—or are you surrounding yourself with voices that build faith and point you towards Jesus?
Guard your mind.
What are you rehearsing? What thoughts are you continually meditating on? Paul gives us a powerful filter:
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable” Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
This isn’t about living in fear of everything around us. It’s about becoming intentional. Not everything deserves access to your heart.
Protect the Well Within
You don’t have to consume everything simply because it’s available. You don’t have to listen to every voice. You don’t have to entertain every thought.
Ask yourself: Is this drawing me closer to Jesus, or is it pulling my heart somewhere I don’t want to go?
The goal isn’t isolation from the world. It’s consecration to God. What you allow to take residence in your heart will eventually influence the direction of your life.
So today, check the gateways.
Watch what you watch.
Listen to what you listen to.
Pay attention to what you think about.
And above all else, guard your heart.
Because there is a wellspring inside you—and what flows from that well matters.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I guard my heart because it is the wellspring from which my life flows [Proverbs 4:23]. My eyes are fixed on Jesus, and I choose what brings light into my life [Matthew 6:22]. I listen to voices that build my faith and draw me closer to God [Romans 10:17]. I take my thoughts captive and bring them into obedience to Christ [2 Corinthians 10:5]. I fix my mind on what is true, pure, lovely and worthy of praise [Philippians 4:8]. The peace of God guards my heart and my mind as I trust Him [Philippians 4:7].
