The Oil Press of Gethsemane

“He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’”

Luke 22:41–42

The word Gethsemane means “oil press.” It was a place where olives were crushed so their oil could be released. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus entered this place of pressing and experienced a weight so great that His sweat fell like drops of blood.

Like the olive, Jesus was being pressed. Out of His surrender flowed the oil of salvation — an anointing that would break the yoke of sin for the whole world. Gethsemane shows us that God often uses seasons of pressure and hardship to release His purposes in us.

When life presses in, we may feel like everything is breaking apart. Yet God can use the very weight of our trials to bring forth something precious. Oil is released through crushing; faith is refined through trials; anointing flows through surrender.

Jesus’ prayer, “Not my will, but Yours be done,” reveals the key to victory in our own Gethsemane moments. When we stop striving and yield our will to God, His power is released. And just as olive oil was used to anoint kings and priests, so too the oil of the Spirit is poured out when we embrace God’s purposes in times of pressure.

3. What new “oil” — character, faith, or ministry — might God be pressing out of this season?

Prayer: Lord, in my times of pressing, help me to trust You. Teach me to surrender my will and believe that out of my struggles You will release new life, new strength, and fresh anointing. Amen.
