Sabbath Resistance
Our dear friend Roma Waterman recently sharedโฆ
The Sabbath is something we rarely do well in our fast-paced culture. Yet Scripture doesn’t treat it as a suggestionโit’s a commandment, spoken not once but twice (Exodus 20:8โ11; Deuteronomy 5:12โ15).
Sabbath is not just about restโit is resistance.
It’s not a polite pause, but a bold declaration: I am no longer a slave to Pharaoh or to endless productivity. I belong to God.
Eugene Peterson once wrote that misunderstanding the Sabbath trivialises it into โa day off.โ But biblically, it’s so much more: a weekly act of trust. Each time you stop, you are proclaiming that your life is sustained not by your striving but by His faithfulness.
When you practice Sabbath, you are choosing to stop. To lay down your compulsion to keep the world spinning, and to remember: God is running it just fine without your anxious hands.
John Mark Comer says, โHurry is violence on the soul.โ Sabbath is the antidote. It reorients us toward delight, wonder, and the whisper of God’s presence.
So let me ask you: what Pharaohs are you resisting when you choose Sabbath?
May you have the courage to stop, to trust, and to rest in the unforced rhythms of grace.

The Pharoah I am resisting is the drive to always be productive and by so doing justifying my existence and worth!
Me too! ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
I appreciate what you are saying but I ask again -what are family carers supposed to do -particularly when it is full on, full time? I find the answer in the captured moments -sometimes only a brief listening to the wind through the pine trees opposite the house, sometimes looking up to see a wonderful cloud formation or the amazing sunset while making the bed ready for night time. I also think of “The practise of the presence of God” by a monk who spent his time peeling potatoes. Susanna Wesley put her apron over her head to indicate to John and Charles that she was praying! I just thank God that he knows our situations and loves us where we are.
Yes Ruth! Perfectly put! ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
