The Gracious Hand Of My God

“The gracious hand of my God upon me” Nehemiah 2:18

When I think of hands being laid on me, I usually think of getting a smack as a kid, fighting or being chosen to do something I don’t want to do!

But this verse makes me think of something else altogether. “The gracious hand of my God was upon me” conjures up a vision of the might of heaven, empowering, sustaining and helping me.

“My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.” Psalm 89:21.

Oh I want the hand of God to rest on me, how about you?

I think of Hands of Protection. The Bible says “He hems me in behind and before” Psalm 139:5.

I remember being chased by men with guns in Zimbabwe, hiding behind the tail of a pick-up truck, praying, terrified but cared for by God. I remember a friend being guarded by visible angels as her car was pulled over by thugs. I remember the whispers of God’s Spirit getting me to change plans for a trip, only to hear of a massive explosion at the time I had been due to be there. His hands protect us.

I think of Hands of Power; “His mighty hand” took the Israelites through the Red Sea (Psalm 136:12). His hands clear the way, smash through walls, lower mountains, obliterate enemies!

I have seen God’s hand overwhelm lives for whom no human intervention was now possible. The sickness was too far gone, the injury beyond repair. But His hands did it! He has literally freed prisoners from captivity, lifted the dying from their death beds and provided for the rejected and the lost.

The same hands that have formed burning suns a billion times bigger than the earth, also formed little Adam’s body by his fingertips, setting in place the lenses in Adam’s eyes and the miniscule bones of his ears. God’s hands are both powerful, and intricately accurate, for me and you.

Finally, I also think of Hands of Approval; “I have chosen you” God says, standing like a Father, hands proudly on the shoulders of His growing son. Perhaps nothing is as healing as approval, and you need to know today, God approves, loves, understands, and is deeply committed to you.

Just think of it, the hands of God, “where His power hides” as Habakkuk 3:4 puts it, have been placed on your life, imparting God’s strength, God’s spiritual DNA, God’s wisdom and approval.

Surely we must say, “If God be for me, who can be against me” Romans 8:31.

The hand of God is on me, and His presence goes before me. He is upholding me, guiding me, and working on my behalf even when I cannot see it. His hand protects me from harm, shields me from the enemy, and covers me with peace. “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me” (Psalm 139:5).

His hand is working behind the scenes—opening doors no one can shut, aligning divine appointments, and causing all things to work together for my good (Romans 8:28). “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear” (Isaiah 59:1).
