The God Who Sees Me
Hagar gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: โYou are the God who sees me,โ for she said, โI have now seen the One who sees me.โ Genesis 16:13 NIV
Hagar was an outcast, wandering in a desert, caught in the storm of a moral maze. She was an Egyptian slave and the mother of Abrahamโs โson of unbelief,โ Ishmael.
Used unnecessarily to try to give birth to Abrahamโs heir (because his wife was barren), Hagar was subsequently mistreated and despised; she eventually found herself in a lonely, difficult, tangled circumstance.
Taking her young son, she ran away from the very family who caused the moral mess, and is soon found wandering in a desert, thirsty and alone. Leaving her son crying under a bush in the desert to die, she began to sob too. Then God stepped in …
โGod heard the boy crying, and the angel of the Lord called Hagar from heaven … โDo not be afraid Hagar, God has heard the boy crying… I will make him a great nation.โ
There, in the desert of loss and confusion, God finds her, and she gives Jehovah the name: โYou are the God who sees me.โ
Realise today, it doesnโt matter who you are, what moral failure, what crippling trial, what confusing circumstance or hope-sapping depression you are in – God sees you.
He sees it all, knows it all, gathers all your tears in a jar and weeps alongside you. In fact, He is still committed to picking your life up and turning your burden into a blessing, your trial into a testimony and your sin into splendour, if you call to Him.
Psalm 139:5 says, โYou hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.โ That means He surrounds you, covering your yesterdays, shielding your today and stands waiting in your tomorrow. Everything that seems confusing today, He promises to turn to good. Just keep trusting.
โTrust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.โ Proverbs 3:5
That means if we simply control the raging thoughts of anxiety within, and instead commit our thoughts to trusting His good kindness, He will construct a super-highway beneath our feet. He will build a way out for us. Of that we can be certain. And like Hagar you will say, โI have seen the God who sees me.โ
See that Heโs right there, at your right hand, watching over you. He will never leave you, nor forsake you, ever.

I walk in confidence today knowing that El Roi, the God who sees, is watching over me, guiding me, and working all things for my good. In moments of loneliness, He sees me. In seasons of struggle, He watches over me. In times of joy or pain, He is near. The God who sees me is not distantโHe is present and compassionate.
I reject the lie that I am unseen or insignificant. My every step, every tear, every hope is noticed by my Heavenly Father. โThe eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cryโ (Psalm 34:15).
