THE FIRST THING ON OUR LIPS EACH DAY

THE FIRST THING ON OUR LIPS EACH DAY

We are looking at the Lordโ€™s Prayer. This is Jesus teaching us how to pray. (Matthew 6:9-13):

โ€œThis, then, is how you should pray:

โ€œโ€˜Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil oneโ€™

โ€œGive us today our daily breadโ€

Hidden in this phrase are two truths that should revolutionise many prayer lives:

  • We should enjoy secret prayer every day. By saying โ€œdailyโ€ Jesus is teaching us that we ask for that days strength, clarity, wisdom, each day. Therefore, it must be daily.

Some say they talk to God every now and then, others live by โ€œFeast and Famineโ€ prayer lives; praying perhaps only once a week, but in a big way, but then hardly at other times.

I sometimes feel that either of these ways are like taking a course of antibiotics, but not in the proper prescribed way, or in the prescribed dosage. The result is that the antibiotics simply will not do what they are made to do, and neither will prayer. You may draw a little strength occasionally, but not enough to walk in the full faith, wisdom, strength and to make your mark on the world God designed for you. When spiritual battles eventually rage, these believers start to crash! Pray secretly every day, in some way, as much as possible.

  • It Should be done early in the day. (Half of my readers just groaned, sorry!). But if you are going to ask for that day’s strength, logic would tell me it needs to be at the start of that day!

Now I know that many would say they arenโ€™t morning people, (Oh trust me, Iโ€™m not either) and Iโ€™m not going to even write what time โ€œearlyโ€ means. But I guess, itโ€™s simply the first thing we should do with each day, as and when we possibly can.

The scientific reality is that your brain is a clean slate, awaiting a fresh imprint for the day, at the start of every day. What you imprint on your mind in those first minutes or hours is going to affect the whole of your day. Even if you are not a morning person, at least give 10 minutes to read, meditate and pray in private โ€“ it will transform your whole day!

I often spend some time in the morning reading, whispering, praying through things, laying them before God โ€“ but then read or listen to Godโ€™s voice in greater detail at later times in the day, when Iโ€™m more awake!

Itโ€™s all about finding what works for you, but I would also encourage you to do โ€œsomethingโ€ right at the start of your day. Even if itโ€™s only a small thing.

The WOMB of the Dawn

Psalms uses the lovely phrase โ€œThe womb of the dawnโ€. Every dawn is a moment to give birth to that dayโ€™s spiritual reality. Is it going to be worry, fear, the news headlines or social media? Or will you give birth to faith, hope, wisdom and strength for the day ahead? Itโ€™s up to you.
