Peace is a Person

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” — John 14:27

Peace is not the Absence of Trouble

What is peace?

The dictionary might define it as freedom from conflict, the absence of war, calmness or tranquillity. But biblical peace is something altogether different.

Jesus never promised His followers a trouble-free life. In fact, He said the opposite:

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

So if peace isn’t the absence of problems, what is it?

Peace is not merely a state of mind. It is not a season when everything is going well. And it certainly isn’t something we have to manufacture within ourselves.

Peace is a Person.

One of the names revealed of God is Jehovah Shalom—the Lord is Peace (Judges 6:24).

Peace is found in His presence.

Peace in the Storm

Think about Jesus in the boat with His disciples.

A violent storm was raging around them, the waves were crashing over the boat, and experienced fishermen were convinced they were going to drown. Yet Jesus was asleep (Mark 4:37–38).

How could He sleep in the middle of that storm? The answer isn’t that there wasn’t a storm.

There was a storm, but the storm wasn’t in Him.

Jesus carried an inner confidence in the Father that was greater than the chaos surrounding Him. And when He stood and commanded the wind and waves, He demonstrated that the One who carries peace also has authority over the storm (Mark 4:39).

That same Jesus lives in you through His Spirit.

A Peace the World Cannot Give

In the final hours before His crucifixion, Jesus knew His disciples were about to face confusion, fear and grief. He didn’t pretend trouble wasn’t coming. Instead, He prepared them for it.

He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives” (John 14:27).

Notice that He didn’t say, I will give you circumstances that always produce peace.

He said, “My peace I give you.”

His peace. The peace that comes from knowing who He is, trusting His character and resting in His presence.

Paul describes it as

“the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,” guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

That means you can have peace when there is no logical reason to have peace. You can put your head on the pillow while the circumstances are still unresolved. You can worship while the answer hasn’t arrived. You can breathe deeply and say, “Jesus, You are with me.”

Carry His Peace

Don’t search for lasting peace in circumstances, possessions, relationships, success or the approval of people. Those things can change in a moment. But Jesus doesn’t change. The world offers peace when everything is under control. Jesus offers peace when nothing is.

So today, whatever storm you are facing, become conscious of His presence. You don’t have to deny the storm. You simply need to remember who is in the boat with you. The Lord is your peace. And because Peace Himself is with you, you can face whatever today brings.

The storm may be around you, but His peace can be within you.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

Jesus is my peace, and I receive His peace rather than the temporary peace the world offers (John 14:27). I will not allow my heart to be troubled or afraid, because Jesus is with me (John 14:27). I have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, guarding my heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). I take heart because Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33). I trust the Lord and remain steadfast in Him, because He keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind is fixed on Him (Isaiah 26:3). I can lie down and sleep in peace, because the Lord makes me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8).
