Life Over Knowledge

Life Over Knowledge

โ€œYahweh-God made all kinds of beautiful trees to grow thereโ€”fruitful trees to satisfy the taste. In the middle of the garden, he planted the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.โ€ย (Genesis 2:9 TPT)

In Eden, God filled the garden with beauty and provision. But right at the center stood two distinct trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Both were real trees, but they also reveal something deeply spiritual. Humanity was created to live by life, not by knowledge.

Think about it: Adam and Eve were designed to enjoy Godโ€™s presence and walk in daily dependence on Him. They were invited to trust, to rest in His wisdom, to live in a childlike faith. But when they reached for knowledge apart from Godโ€”โ€œto be like Himโ€โ€”everything changed. Their eyes were opened, but what they saw was shame, fear, and judgment. Knowledge without trust became their downfall.

We still struggle with this today. We often think, โ€œIf I just knew more, Iโ€™d be secure.โ€ Knowledge is a gift, but itโ€™s not life. Paul warned, โ€œKnowledge puffs up, but love builds upโ€ (1 Corinthians 8:1). The more we lean on our own understanding, the less room we leave for trust. Pride and independence creep in.

God invites us back to the Tree of Lifeโ€”back to a trusting, simple faith. Jesus said, โ€œUnless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heavenโ€ (Matthew 18:3).

Are you striving to know it all, or resting in the One who knows it all? Choose life. Trust like a child. Depend fully. Thatโ€™s where true freedom is found.

My Strength Comes from God, apart from the Lord, I can do nothing (John 15:5). I lean not on my own understanding but trust in Him with all my heart, acknowledging Him in all my ways, and He directs my path (Proverbs 3:5โ€“6).

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me (Psalm 28:7). I cast all my cares on Him because He cares for me (1 Peter 5:7). I will not fear, for God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

STRONGER WITH A 40 DAY DEVOTIONAL

This book is all about where we find strength. Jarrod writes that โ€œGod provides us with strength builders along our pathโ€ โ€“ some we need to pick up and use, others will simply happen to us along the way, by a kind of divine providence. But knowing these seasons of muscle building are from heaven (โ€˜cos they usually look like theyโ€™re from hell at first!) is vital to recognising Godโ€™s plan for your resilience.
