God’s Painful Missions

God’s Painful Missions

“The angel of Yahweh encountered Hagar by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. He asked her, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and what are you doing here?” She replied, “I’m running away from Sarai, my mistress.” The angel of Yahweh told her, “You have to go back to your mistress and humbly submit to her.”

Genesis 16:7-9 TPT

Hagar’s story is a painful one. She had been mistreated, rejected, and cast into the wilderness with nowhere to go. She was on the run, longing for freedom and relief. Yet, when the angel of the Lord found her, the message wasn’t the one she expected. It wasn’t “keep running,” or “you’re free now.” Instead, God told her to go back and submit—to return to a difficult, even unfair, situation.

Sometimes God’s instructions feel like painful missions. He asks us to stay in marriages that feel complicated and heavy. He tells us to shoulder responsibilities we’d rather lay down. He calls us to remain in a church that doesn’t feel like the perfect fit. Life can feel like an assault course, or like wandering through a desert with no clear end in sight. Yet in these narrow places, God is at work weaving His purposes.

Noah built an ark before rain had even fallen. Joseph endured the pit and prison before stepping into the palace. Daniel prayed when it meant facing lions. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego chose the furnace, only to meet Jesus there. Even Mary endured the shame of a mysterious pregnancy that led to the world’s salvation. Each one faced a painful path, but on the other side was promotion, purpose, and power.

Perhaps you are in such a place right now. You long for release, but heaven’s word to you is, “Stay. Endure. Trust.” If God is not giving you permission to run, it must mean He has something greater in mind. Your ashes are about to become beauty. Your wilderness is about to give way to springs of life.

Don’t give up before the dawn. Don’t quit before the miracle. Sometimes all you need to do is keep going. Care for your soul. Endure the painful mission. Breakthrough is coming.

Today, I rise again with hope. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in me (Romans 8:11), and by His power, I will keep going. I will endure. I will overcome. Even when the road is painful and the journey feels heavy, I will not give up. My strength is not my own—“The Lord is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).

Though I may be pressed on every side, I am not crushed; though I may be struck down, I am not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). I fix my eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, for this momentary trouble is producing in me an eternal glory that far outweighs it all (2 Corinthians 4:17–18).
