Focus on the Good Stuff

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8 NIV

Do you feel discouraged today?

Sometimes we all have those days. We wake up feeling down, deflated and discouraged. Perhaps nothing dramatic has happened, yet somehow the weight of life feels heavier than usual.

I was feeling like this the other week, and someone reminded me, “Focus on the good stuff!”

Immediately, my mind went to Philippians 4:8. What a simple instruction—and yet what a powerful weapon!

The Apostle Paul tells us to deliberately direct our thoughts towards that which is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and praiseworthy.

The Message paraphrases this beautifully,

“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” (Philippians 4:8, MSG).

Not Everything You Think Is True

The Passion Translation begins,

“So keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real” (Philippians 4:8, TPT).

That is so important because not everything we think is true. A thought can enter your mind without being an accurate reflection of reality. Fear can speak. Circumstances can speak. Disappointment can speak. And the enemy certainly speaks.

Jesus said of the devil,

“When he lies, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44, AMP).

The enemy specialises in lies and half-truths. He whispers, “Nothing will change.” “You are alone.” “God has forgotten you.” “Things will always be this way.”

But the Word of God calls us back to truth.

This is why we must guard our hearts and minds and continually return to what God has said. His Word is authentic. His promises are trustworthy. His character is unchanging.

Whatever You Focus On Grows

There is a powerful principle here: whatever we continually focus on becomes magnified in our thinking.

If we constantly rehearse everything that is wrong, discouragement can gain momentum. But when we intentionally turn our eyes towards Jesus, something begins to shift. We lift our eyes. We remember His faithfulness. We recall His goodness. We magnify Him above the circumstances that have been occupying our thoughts.

Discouragement may knock on your door today, but you do not have to invite it in and give it a permanent seat at your table. Instead, focus on the good stuff.

Count your blessings. Remember God’s faithfulness. Thank Him for His grace and mercy. Meditate on every glorious thing He has done. And as you fix your thoughts on what is true, beautiful, holy and worthy of praise, allow the Holy Spirit to renew your mind.

Today, lift your eyes. Jesus is still on the throne. God is still good. His promises are still true, and there is always something to praise Him for.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

Today I fix my thoughts on whatever is true, noble, pure, lovely and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8). I reject the lies of the enemy and choose to believe the truth of God’s Word, because Jesus is faithful and the devil is a liar (John 8:44). I take my thoughts captive and bring them into obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). I set my mind on things above and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus (Colossians 3:2; Hebrews 12:2). I will remember the goodness of the Lord and declare His faithfulness in my life (Psalm 27:13). The joy of the Lord is my strength, and I will choose to rejoice in Him today (Nehemiah 8:10; Philippians 4:4).
