Finding The Song in The Roar

“By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.” — Psalm 42:8

One of the most beautiful details in Psalm 42 is what happens immediately after the waterfall.

The Psalmist describes the roar of deep waters. Waves crashing over him. Breakers sweeping across his life. Yet the very next verse speaks of God’s song in the night.

That sequence is worth pondering.

Roar.
Song.
Prayer.
Hope.

The circumstances have not necessarily changed, but something within the Psalmist has.

Too often we assume that peace comes when the noise stops. We tell ourselves that we’ll worship once the pressure eases. We’ll pray when things settle down. We’ll trust God when life becomes simpler.

Yet Psalm 42 suggests another possibility. What if God wants us to discover His song in the middle of the roar?

The Hebrew text speaks of the voice or sound of the waterfalls. The torrent has a voice. The storm has a sound. The circumstances are loud. (Bible Hub)

But louder still is the faithfulness of God.

The Psalmist eventually hears something greater than the waterfall. He hears the song of the Lord.

This is one of the hidden treasures of waiting prayer. We begin by bringing our concerns, frustrations, fears, and questions. Yet as we remain in God’s presence, our attention gradually shifts. The roar loses its dominance. The song becomes clearer.

Many of us spend so much energy listening to the noise around us that we miss the melody of heaven.

The news has a voice.
Fear has a voice.
Disappointment has a voice.
Criticism has a voice.

But God has a voice too, and those who wait upon Him eventually learn to recognise it.

The waterfall has not disappeared. The waves are still present. Yet somehow the song becomes stronger than the storm.

This is why mature believers often carry peace in difficult seasons. It is not because they have fewer problems. It is because they have learned to hear another sound.

May God teach us to listen beyond the roar.
May He help us hear His song in the night.
And may His song become our prayer until hope rises once again within our hearts.
