Finding God in Unexpected Places
โWhen Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, โSurely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.โ He was afraid and said, โHow awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.โโ
Genesis 28:16โ17 (NIVUK)
Jacob was not in a holy temple when he encountered God. He was on the runโafraid, uncertain, and alone. Stopping for the night in a โcertain place,โ with nothing but a stone for his pillow, Jacob fell asleep and dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven. Angels ascended and descended, and God Himself spoke promises of blessing and presence. When Jacob awoke, stunned, he declared: โSurely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.โ
Isnโt that how life often works? We expect God in the sanctuary, in the worship service, in the quiet moments of devotionโand indeed, He is there. But the surprise of His presence often comes in the wilderness, in the valleys, in the desperate places we would never choose for ourselves.
Elijah found Godโs provision not in plenty, but through a poor widow in Zarephath, and even through ravens carrying scraps of food. Israel discovered His faithfulness as water flowed from a rock in the desert. Moses encountered Him not in Pharaohโs palace, but in the flames of a bush that burned yet was not consumed. Time and again, God shows up in the unexpected, making barren places into gateways of heaven.
The truth is, testimonies are born out of tests. The greatest stories in Scripture emerge from the greatest battles, because hardship pushes Godโs people to lean more deeply on Him. Our valleys become altars. Our troubles become doorways. Jacob thought he was simply running for his life, but God was laying a foundation for his destiny.
Perhaps you, too, feel dejected, lost, or weary. Maybe you are โon the runโ from failure, fear, or disappointment. Take heart: your trial may be the very place where heaven breaks in. David wrote, โYou prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.โ It is in the dark days, when enemies surround, that we come to know God in ways our easy days never reveal.
So pause and look around. That hard place, that lonely season, that unexpected trialโit may be more than you realise. It may be the house of God, the gate of heaven. Surely, the Lord is in this place.

Today, I choose to open my eyes to God’s presence. I choose to recognise Him in the unexpected. I choose to trust that He is closer than I feel and stronger than what I face. Like Jacob, I confess: โSurely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of itโ (Genesis 28:16). What feels like a wilderness may be the very house of God.
I declare that no season is wasted, no tear unseen, no trial without purpose. โGod is our refuge and strength, a very present help in troubleโ (Psalm 46:1). He is hereโworking, shifting, healing, guiding, and preparing the path ahead.
