Elohim: The God Who Is Your Strength

Elohim: The God Who Is Your Strength

โ€œIn the beginning Elohim created heaven and earth.โ€ Gen 1:1

His Name Reveals His Nature

When you introduce yourself to someone, the name or title you use may vary depending on your relationship with that person. Friends might call you by a nickname, family members may use a more personal name, while your doctor, employer, or teacher is likely to use something more formal. Each name or title reveals something about who you are and the nature of your relationship with that person.

The same is true of God. The Bible reveals many names of God, and each one gives us another glimpse into His character and nature.

The very first name Scripture uses for God is Elohim. Genesis begins,

โ€œIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earthโ€ (Genesis 1:1).

The Hebrew name used here is ELOHIM, meaning, the Supreme & Mighty One. Right from the outset He introduces Himself as one of strength, might and power. Before we read about His miracles, His covenant promises or His dealings with humanity, we meet Elohimโ€”the God of limitless strength, supreme authority and creative power.

How Big Is Your God?

Isaiah gives us an astonishing picture of the greatness of Elohim:

โ€œWho has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?โ€ (Isaiah 40:12).

Then Scripture declares that the nations are โ€œlike a drop in a bucketโ€ and are regarded as dust on the scales (Isaiah 40:15). He sits enthroned above the earth, while its inhabitants are like grasshoppers (Isaiah 40:22).

Wow! It is almost overwhelming to consider the sheer greatness of our God.

But then something beautiful happens.

The passage doesn’t finish by telling us how insignificant we are. It tells us what this mighty God does for us.

โ€œHe gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weakโ€ (Isaiah 40:29).

What a revelation! The God who holds the oceans in His hands is concerned about your exhaustion. The God who stretches out the heavens hears your prayer. The God who never grows weary gives strength to those who do.

When You Are Weak

We were never designed to live this life independently of God.

Our culture celebrates self-sufficiency, but the Kingdom teaches God-dependency. There are moments when our own strength runs out precisely so that we can discover His strength is more than enough.

Isaiah says,

โ€œEven youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strengthโ€ (Isaiah 40:30โ€“31).

Maybe today you feel exhausted. Perhaps emotionally, spiritually or physically you feel like you have nothing left.

Then remember His name. Elohim. The Mighty One is with you. The One who created the universe can strengthen your weary heart. The One who has never run out of power can fill you again.

Paul prayed that believers would experience โ€œthe unlimited riches of his glory and favorโ€ until they were strengthened with supernatural power through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:14โ€“16).

That is my prayer for you today. May supernatural strength rise within you. May fresh faith replace weariness. May the Holy Spirit breathe upon the embers of your heart and cause you to rise again.

You don’t have to manufacture strength you don’t have. Draw from the One who does.

When you are weak, He is strong.
When you are weary, He renews.
When you have nothing left, Elohim is still more than enough.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

Elohim is my mighty God, and He is the source of my strength (Genesis 1:1). When I am weary, God gives me strength, and when I am weak, He increases my power (Isaiah 40:29). I wait upon the Lord, and He renews my strength (Isaiah 40:31). I am strengthened with supernatural power through the Holy Spirit in my inner being (Ephesians 3:16). I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). I will not live in my own strength, because Godโ€™s grace is sufficient for me and His power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

    Hi!

I\’ve quoted Jarrod in a book I am writing, and want to check that it\’s ok, please.

What I have written is this:

Jarrod Cooper, pastor, worship leader and author, explains this well when he gives an example of Gideonโ€™s army being reduced in Judges 7:2-7. He describes it as God saying, โ€˜Thereโ€™s still too much of you in this.โ€™ The โ€˜youโ€™ that needs to be given up is ego, pride, wilfulness, perfectionism, insecurity โ€“ anything that may lead us to think we can get to this place by our own effort

    Here\’s the reference:

    It\’s from Jarrod Cooper, โ€˜Spirit and Word Daily Devotionalโ€™, https://jarrodcooper.net/now-watch-me-move/ (accessed 1st September 2026).

Can I have your OK on this?

    Christina
