While You Were Sleeping
โAs the heavy veil of night fell, Abram went into a deep state of sleep, and suddenly a great dreadful darkness surrounded him and he was filled with fear.โ
Genesisโฌ โญ15โฌ:โญ12โฌ โญTPTโฌโฌ
Itโs remarkable how often God does His best work while His people are asleep. Abram dozed off under the weight of night, and while he rested, God cut covenant with himโan everlasting promise that required nothing of Abram but trust. Abram slept, and God worked.
This is not the only time heavenโs story unfolds in the stillness of sleep. Adam was placed in deep rest, and when he awoke, Eve was standing before himโGodโs answer to his aloneness. Jacob, fleeing from Esau, lay down exhausted in the wilderness and dreamt of a ladder reaching to heaven. Daniel received visions of kingdoms while asleep. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, was guided in dreams to protect the child. Over and over, God moves while His people rest.
Jesus even compared the Kingdom of God to a seed planted in the ground. The farmer sleeps and wakes, day after day, yet the seed growsโhe knows not how (Mark 4:27). In Psalm 127 weโre told, โHe gives sleep to those He loves,โ and even more, โHe provides for them while they sleep.โ
Rest is not idleness; it is faith. When we choose rest, we declare, โThe world does not rest on my shoulders, but on His.โ Productivity is not our god. Striving, hustling, and endless activity do not build the KingdomโGod does.
So, friend, you can lay your head down tonight with confidence. The Father is at work behind the scenes. While you sleep, He is aligning, preparing, and fulfilling His covenant promises. Be at peace. God is working, even when you cannot see it.

I will rest in perfect peace, knowing that God is working even while I sleep. โHe grants sleep to those He lovesโ (Psalm 127:2). When I lay down, I will not fear, for the Lord watches over me. โIn peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safetyโ (Psalm 4:8).
Even in the stillness of night, God is movingโhealing, aligning, and restoring what concerns me. I may rest, but He never slumbers (Psalm 121:3โ4). I release my worries, my striving, and my plans into His hands. The same God who works in the day works through the night. His promises are unfolding even when I cannot see it.
