When Plan B Is Better Than Plan A

When Plan B Is Better Than Plan A

โ€œNow to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.โ€ (Ephesians 3:20)

Most of us spend a good portion of our lives trying to persuade God to bless our plans.

We create our timelines. We form our expectations. We imagine how things should unfold. We develop a picture of what success looks like and then ask the Lord to help us get there. Yet one of the most surprising discoveries in the Christian life is that God is often less interested in fulfilling our plans than He is in fulfilling His purposes.

And thankfully so.

If we are honest, some of the greatest blessings of our lives have arrived wearing the disguise of disappointment.

We call them interruptions.
God calls them redirections.

We call them setbacks.
God calls them upgrades.

One of my favourite examples of this is Moses.

If there was ever a man who seemed to have missed out on his destiny, surely it was him. After leading Israel through the wilderness, confronting Pharaoh, witnessing miracles beyond imagination and carrying one of the greatest callings in biblical history, Moses made a costly mistake. Instead of speaking to the rock as God instructed, he struck it in frustration.

The consequence was devastating.

God told him he would not enter the Promised Land.

From ground level, that feels harsh. In fact, many people have wrestled with the story for centuries. Moses had endured the complaints of millions of people, sacrificed everything in obedience to God and carried immense responsibility for decades. Then, right at the finish line, he was told he would not cross over.

If all we see is the earthly perspective, the story feels tragic.

But the balcony of heaven reveals something different.

The Bible tells us that Moses died and that God Himself buried him. Yet the next time we encounter Moses in Scripture, something extraordinary has happened. He is standing in the Promised Land after all.

Not with a crowd of grumbling Israelites.
Not wandering through tribal disputes and territorial disagreements.
Not dealing with complaints about food, water and leadership.

Instead, he is standing on a mountain beside Jesus Christ Himself at the Transfiguration.

The dream was fulfilled.
The promise was kept.
But God fulfilled it in a way Moses could never have imagined.

What looked like rejection was actually redirection.
What looked like loss was actually promotion.
What looked like Plan B turned out to be better than Plan A.

How often does that happen in our lives?

A relationship ends and we are devastated, only to discover later that God was protecting us from something we could not see.

A door closes and we feel forgotten, only to realise years later that the closed door led us to a far better opportunity.
A ministry changes direction. A business fails. A dream is delayed. A prayer seems unanswered.

From our perspective, we mourn the death of Plan A.

Meanwhile, heaven is quietly preparing something greater.
Abraham thought the promise was about having a son.
God was thinking about nations.

Joseph thought his story was about escaping prison.
God was thinking about preserving entire populations.

The disciples thought the cross was the end.
God knew it was the beginning.

Again and again throughout Scripture we discover that Godโ€™s plans are not merely different from oursโ€”they are bigger than ours.

The challenge is that we usually cannot see that in the middle of the story.

When circumstances disappoint us, our natural instinct is to assume something has gone wrong. Yet the Bible repeatedly teaches that God is able to work through setbacks, failures, delays and disappointments to accomplish purposes beyond our imagination.

That does not mean every painful situation is enjoyable.
It does mean every painful situation is redeemable.

The Lord is remarkably skilled at taking broken pieces and creating beautiful outcomes.

Perhaps today you are grieving something that did not work out as expected. Maybe a dream has died. Maybe a door has closed. Maybe life has unfolded differently than you planned.

Before you conclude that God has abandoned His promises, remember Moses.
Remember Joseph.
Remember the cross.
And remember that heavenโ€™s perspective is always larger than yours.

The God who sees the end from the beginning may not be giving you less than you hoped for.
He may simply be preparing something better than you imagined.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I know that God is able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine according to His power working within me (Ephesians 3:20). The Lord directs my steps even when I do not understand the path before me (Proverbs 16:9). God works all things together for my good because I love Him and am called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). I trust the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding, knowing He will make my paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).
