“There’s No ‘I’ in This Fight”
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Exodus 14:14 NIVUK
There are moments in life when God calls us not to do something—but to stop. When the Israelites stood trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea, panic set in. Their natural instinct was to run, fight, or at least do something! But God’s instruction was simple: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
Sometimes, stillness is spiritual warfare. To be still when fear screams at you to act is a declaration of faith. To rest when anxiety tells you to strive is an act of defiance against the enemy. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) When you stop fighting in your strength, you create room for God to fight in His.
During one of the most difficult seasons of my life, I had a strange dream. In it, I was preparing to fight Mike Tyson in a boxing ring! I was typing a report about the upcoming match, but I grew frustrated because my computer keyboard was missing the letter “I”. Then I heard a voice say, “It’s ok—there’s no ‘I’ in fight.” I laughed in the dream, thinking, of course there is! But the voice persisted, “No—there’s no ‘I’ in this fight.”
When I woke, I knew it was a word from God. He was saying that I was not in this battle—He was. My part was to stand still and trust. And sure enough, God moved miraculously. The situation that had caused such stress turned around. All I had to do was rest and watch Him move.
There are times when God says, “Pick up your sling and fight,” and times when He says, “Lay down your sword and watch Me.” When faced with giants, mountains, or impossible situations—pray, love, obey, but also discern when He’s calling you to rest. Some storms aren’t calmed by shouting; they’re silenced by sleeping. Remember Jesus—calm, asleep in the boat, while the storm raged.
Our Father never slumbers or sleeps. He never wearies. So even when you’re surrounded, stay in faith. Don’t let fear pull you out of the place of rest. Let God fight for you. He will vindicate you, protect you, provide for you, and bring breakthrough in His perfect way and time.
So today—be still. Stay at peace. There’s no “I” in this fight… only Him.

I declare that I will be still and trust in the Lord, for “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14). I lay down my striving, my fear, and my need to control, knowing this battle belongs to God. I choose to rest in His sovereignty and power (Psalm 46:10). In the stillness, I remember who He is—my refuge, my strength, and my ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).
When my heart feels overwhelmed, I will not panic or retreat. The Lord goes before me and stands with me. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1). He is my defender and my victory. I declare that I will stand firm and watch the salvation of the Lord unfold. I trust the God who makes a way through the sea and brings deliverance in impossible moments (Exodus 14:13). I will be still, I will trust, and I will praise—because the victory belongs to the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:15)

Thank you Jarrod. This is so spot on & timely. The Lord gave me this exact scripture last week about a situation and I’ve been wondering exactly how to work out the “be still” part (when the African in me wants to shout the house down!🤣). Looks like I don’t do anything at all and sleep, I am good at so thanks for confirming that😉. Thanks again & I have been very blessed with these devotional over the last year or so. Hope you have all been well. Greetings to the rest of the family and you all have a great Christmas & New year🙏🏾
Bless you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
