The Problem Isn’t The Mountain

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)

A few years ago, I had a dream that changed the way I look at difficulties, disappointments and delays.

In the dream, I found myself standing on a wooden balcony with Jesus. He was holding a small leaf in His hand. Looking at me, He said, “This is your life.”

Then suddenly I became aware that the balcony overlooked a vast forest stretching beyond the horizon. It seemed endless. As I stared at the canopy, Jesus pointed toward it and said, “And this is your eternal life.”

In an instant I understood.

My entire earthly journey—eighty, ninety, perhaps even one hundred and twenty years—was like that tiny leaf compared to the forest of eternity that lies ahead for every believer.

Like many people, I often find myself obsessed with the immediate. The challenge in front of me. The prayer that hasn’t been answered. The setback that doesn’t make sense. The mountain that seems to dominate my horizon.

Yet heaven does not view life from ground level.

God sees from eternity.

When I woke from that dream, I began mentally dividing the leaf into years, then days, then hours. I thought about the particular challenges I was facing at that time. They felt enormous. Some of them had occupied my thoughts for months. Yet when placed against the backdrop of eternity, they suddenly appeared incredibly small.

The mountain had not changed.

My perspective had.

Many of us spend our lives staring at today’s problems while forgetting tomorrow’s promises. We become consumed by temporary difficulties because we lose sight of the eternal story God is writing.

The Apostle Paul understood this tension. He experienced beatings, imprisonment, rejection, persecution and suffering that most of us will never face. Yet he called them “light and momentary troubles.” Not because they were small, but because he was comparing them to something infinitely greater.

He was viewing life from the balcony of heaven.

When we live only from earth’s perspective, every delay feels permanent. Every disappointment feels fatal. Every unanswered prayer feels like abandonment. But when we begin to see as heaven sees, we realise that God is working on a much larger canvas than the one visible to us today.

The missionary who laboured twenty-five years before seeing six young men saved probably wondered many times whether he had failed. Yet those six young converts went on to transform entire regions with the Gospel. Heaven was writing a bigger story than he could see.

Abraham wandered for decades before receiving the promise. Joseph spent years in prison before reaching the palace. Moses endured forty years in a wilderness before stepping into leadership. Even Jesus spent thirty hidden years preparing for three years of public ministry.

God is never in a hurry, because God sees eternity.

The enemy wants us to focus on the leaf. God wants us to see the forest.

Perhaps today you are carrying a burden that feels overwhelming. Maybe there is a relationship that remains broken, a financial pressure that refuses to lift, a dream that appears delayed, or a prayer that seems unanswered.

Lift your eyes.

Stand on the balcony.

Remember that you are not merely a human being trying to survive this week. You are an eternal son or daughter of God. Your story does not end with this season. Your Father is working all things together for good. The chapter may be difficult, but the book is not finished.

The mountain may look large from the valley, but from the balcony of heaven it is remarkably small.

One day you will look back and discover that the thing which threatened to break you actually became part of the path God used to bless you.

I fix my eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen, because what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). I know that God is working all things together for my good because I love Him and am called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). I will not fear the future because my times are in His hands (Psalm 31:15). I am confident that He who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).
