The Orphan-Hearted Son vs. The Beloved Son
“Jesus continued:ย โThere was a man who had two sons.ย ย The younger one said to his father, โFather, give me my share of the estate.โย So he divided his propertyย between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealthย in wild living.ย After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need…โWhen he came to his senses, he said, โHow many of my fatherโs hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!ย ย I will set out and go back to my father…So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:11-20
The orphan-hearted son is impatient: โI want it now!โ he demands. Driven by insecurity, he grabs for control.
But the Beloved Son rests in the Fatherโs perfect timing, trusting in His goodness.
The orphan-hearted son feels entitled and ungrateful: โGive me what I deserve!โ he snatches.
But the Beloved Son lives in gratitude, knowing all things come from love, not merit.
The orphan-hearted son believes things matter more than relationship: โGive me my share of the estate,โ he insistsโseeking the Fatherโs stuff but not the Father Himself. He imagines possessions will heal his ache for identity.
But the Beloved Son desires the Fatherโs heart more than His hand, knowing intimacy is the greatest inheritance.
The orphan-hearted son squanders blessing to fill the void of rejection.
The Beloved Son finds his treasure in belongingโto Father and family.
The orphan-hearted son becomes a beggar, striving, performing, and scheming to feel worthy.
The Beloved Son walks in peace. He trusts the Father whether abounding or abased, and he has nothing to prove.
The cure for the orphan heart? Come home.
The Father sees you. He runs to you. He embraces you with compassion, robes you with dignity, kisses you with joy, and restores your sonship. You donโt have to strive for loveโyou were made for it.
A feast awaits if youโll stop running and let yourself be embraced. The Father says, โEverything I have is yours.โ (Luke 15:31)
Prayer: Father, teach us to rest in Your love. Heal our orphaned hearts and restore us to joy. Let us live as true sons and daughters, at home in Your embrace. Amen.

My Fatherโs arms are always open to receive me. No matter how far Iโve wandered, His mercy runs to meet me, His forgiveness restores me, and His love clothes me in righteousness.
I reject shame and condemnation, for I am a beloved child, fully welcomed back into the Fatherโs house. I live in the joy of His presence, the abundance of His grace, and the celebration of His redeeming love.
