The 5 Essentials Every Church Must Have

In an age of changing models and emerging expressions, it’s important to ask: What actually makes a church… a church? Strip away the lights, stages, buildings, programs — what’s left? Acts 2:42 gives us a clear foundation. Whether you’re gathering with 2 or 2000, here are five essentials every authentic church must have:

1. Apostolic Connection

Every church needs apostolic input — not hierarchy, but relationship. This means connecting with someone who carries a trans-local vision, biblical wisdom, and prophetic insight. Avoid lone-ranger mindsets or echo chambers. Access teaching that goes deeper than personal stories or opinions. Good testimony is encouraging, but solid teaching equips. Even Jesus didn’t send His disciples out alone. Neither should we.

2. Community

Church is not an event — it’s a family. Real community means regular gathering and deep involvement in each other’s lives. It’s not enough to just attend; we must belong. It’s messy, it’s beautiful, and it’s absolutely essential. In Acts 2, the believers shared meals, homes, resources, and lives. That’s church.

3. Communion

At the heart of the early church was the table, not a stage. The Lord’s Supper wasn’t a monthly ritual — it was a regular, sacred practice that centred them on Christ. Communion reorients our hearts, reminds us of the cross, and invites the presence of Jesus. Never underestimate its power. No pulpit can replace the table.

4. Prayer

A church that doesn’t pray is not alive. We are called to be a house of prayer, not just a house of teaching or worship. Prayer is where power is released, intimacy is formed, and battles are won. Make it corporate, passionate, consistent. Gather to seek Him — not just talk about Him.

5. The Great Commission

Every true church must live with a mission: Go and make disciples. If we’re not reaching out, we’re not fully alive. Discipleship isn’t just a class — it’s a lifestyle of walking with people, helping them follow Jesus deeply and practically. If we’re not multiplying, we’re stagnating.

Whether you’re gathering in a cathedral, a coffee shop, or a living room, these five things form the heartbeat of the Church. Without them, it may be a meeting — but it’s not a church.

Let’s get back to the simplicity, power, and beauty of what Jesus designed.
