Take The Altar Into The Streets

Worship Was Never Meant to Stay Inside the Building

Charles Spurgeon once said:

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor.”

Strong words perhaps, but deeply revealing.

The Gospel has always been a sending Gospel. Encounter with God was never meant to end with personal blessing alone. Every true altar eventually becomes a commissioning place.

This is why I believe the Church is entering a fresh era of missionary innovation. Around the world, believers are beginning to realise that ministry is not confined to pulpits, platforms or church buildings. Worshippers are being sent into every sphere imaginable carrying the presence of God into places traditional religion could never reach.

Jesus never commanded us merely to build meetings. He commanded us to disciple nations.

That requires movement. It requires creativity. It requires believers who hear heaven at the altar and then carry heaven into culture.

For some, that still means far-flung nations and unreached people groups. Thank God for that calling. The nations still matter deeply to God.

But increasingly, mission fields are appearing everywhere around us — business, media, government, entertainment, hospitality, technology, education, the arts, sport and community life. The world is no longer waiting for the Church to invite it into our buildings. The Spirit is inviting the Church back out into the world.

And worship, sound and song are part of that movement.

Carrying Heaven Into Unexpected Places

I have a friend who was invited to sing and minister to a group of unsaved millionaires and businessmen in a grand home. Spontaneous prophetic song flowed, and so did the tears! That’s taking the worship of the altar out into the world — on earth, as it is in heaven indeed!

The same friend has found herself in television studios, moving prophetically among celebrities, producers and camera crews. Lives were surrendered to Christ in places where no traditional altar call had been planned.

That is where worship is going.

Another friend once prayed for a nightclub owner who was physically healed by the power of God. In gratitude, the owner allowed him to sing in the nightclub that same evening.

Imagine the scene. Prostitutes. Drunken customers. Music pounding. Brokenness everywhere.

And then he began singing “Amazing Grace.”

As worship filled the room, tears began streaming down faces. Men and women who probably would never have entered a church building suddenly found themselves overwhelmed by the presence of God inside a nightclub. For a moment, heaven invaded darkness. The club became a sanctuary.

That is missionary worship.

Not confined to church culture. Not limited by sacred spaces. Not afraid of darkness.

Carrying the altar into impossible places.

I am called to carry the presence of God beyond church walls and into the world around me (Mark 16:15).
