Stay Under The Waterfall

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all Your waves and breakers have swept over me.” — Psalm 42:7

There is something fascinating about the language of Psalm 42. The old King James Version speaks of “waterspouts,” but the Hebrew word tsinnor is probably describing a waterfall, cataract, or rushing mountain torrent rather than the waterspout we might imagine today. The Psalmist is standing amid the thunder of cascading waters, hearing stream call to stream and deep call to deep. (Biblia)

Most of us come to God asking for a drink. We arrive thirsty. We arrive tired. We arrive hoping for a quick answer, a fresh touch, or a little encouragement for the road ahead. Yet sometimes God’s response is not to hand us a cup of water. Sometimes He invites us beneath a waterfall.

The Psalmist wasn’t describing a peaceful stream. He was describing overwhelming waters. Waves upon waves. Breakers upon breakers. Trouble upon trouble. Yet remarkably, he recognised that these were God’s waves and God’s breakers. Even in the turmoil, God was still present.

Waiting on God is often misunderstood. We imagine sitting quietly until something happens. Yet biblical waiting is not passive. It is positioning ourselves beneath the flow of God’s presence. It is remaining where His voice can be heard, even when the roar is louder than we expected.

A waterfall changes landscapes not through one dramatic moment but through continual exposure. Day after day, year after year, the water keeps flowing until solid rock begins to yield. In the same way, prayer changes us. Not merely through occasional breakthroughs, but through sustained exposure to God.

Perhaps that is why some of the deepest transformations in our lives happen slowly. We pray for a day and see little change. We pray for a week and wonder if anything is happening. Yet somewhere beneath the surface, the water is doing its work.

Prayer is not simply about getting answers. Prayer is remaining beneath the waterfall long enough for God to shape us.

The Lord is looking for people who will stay. People who will remain when the emotions fade. People who will linger when the excitement settles. People who understand that waiting is not wasted time. It is formation time.

If you feel overwhelmed today, don’t run from the waterfall. Stay beneath it. Let His presence wash over your fears, disappointments, ambitions, wounds, and expectations. What one moment under the waterfall cannot accomplish, a season under the waterfall can.
