Speak Life, Not Wounds

Speak Life, Not Wounds

โ€œKind words are like honeyโ€”sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.โ€ โ€” Proverbs 16:24

Words Matter

Two words seem to be appearing everywhere at the moment: Be Kind.

And perhaps we need the reminder more than ever.

With the explosion of social media, it has become incredibly easy for people to say things they would never dare say face-to-face. They can type something cruel, press โ€œsend,โ€ and never have to look into the eyes of the person receiving these words.

But whoever coined the phrase, โ€œSticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,โ€ got it wrong.

Words do hurt.

But here’s the beautiful thing: words can also heal.

Proverbs tells us, โ€œYour own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when you are cruelโ€ (Proverbs 11:17). What we say doesn’t only affect other peopleโ€”it affects us too. Kindness has a way of nourishing our own souls.

Become a Voice of Life

The Bible is remarkably practical about our speech.

โ€œA gentle answer turns away wrath, but hard words stir up angerโ€ (Proverbs 15:1).

โ€œKind words are like honeyโ€”sweet to the soul and healthy for the bodyโ€ (Proverbs 16:24).

โ€œA personโ€™s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brookโ€ (Proverbs 18:4).

Imagine if that became our reputation. When people encounter us, they encounter refreshing water.

When they are discouraged, our words give courage.
When they are wounded, our words bring healing.
When they are angry, our gentleness brings peace.

Yet we must be honest. We have all been wounded by someone else’s words, but we have also wounded others with ours. Anger, insecurity, jealousy, frustration, and pride can cause words to escape our mouths that we desperately wish we could take back.

Proverbs gives us a sobering warning:

โ€œTelling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrowโ€ (Proverbs 25:18).

So before you speak today, pause.

Ask the Holy Spirit: โ€œJesus, are these words going to give life or take it away?โ€

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I declare that my words will bring life, encouragement, and grace to those who hear me (Ephesians 4:29). I choose gentle words that turn away anger and reflect the heart of Jesus (Proverbs 15:1). My tongue is a fountain of life, and I will use it to refresh and strengthen others (Proverbs 18:4). I will not use my words to belittle, gossip about, or wound others, but I will speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). The Holy Spirit fills me with love, kindness, patience, and self-control, and these qualities will shape the way I speak (Galatians 5:22-23). I will let the words of Christ fill my heart so abundantly that my speech continually brings glory to God and blessing to others (Colossians 3:16-17).
