Prophesy!
โThen he said to me, โProphesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, โThis is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.โโโ
(Ezekiel 37:9, NIVUK)
A Valley Waiting for a Voice
Ezekiel 37 opens with one of the most dramatic scenes in the entire Bible. The prophet is carried by the Spirit of God into a vast valley filled with dry bonesโbones that have clearly been dead a long time. God asks him a confronting question: โSon of man, can these bones live?โ (Ezekiel 37:3).
Humanly speaking, the answer is obvious. Dead bones do not live again.
But God gives Ezekiel a surprising instruction. He does not say, โWatch what I will do.โ He says, โProphesy to these bones.โ (Ezekiel 37:4). Ezekielโs voice is invited into the miracle.
As Ezekiel speaks the word of the Lord, the impossible begins to unfold. Bones rattle together. Tendons and flesh appear. But still there is no breathโuntil God tells Ezekiel to prophesy again: โCome, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.โ (Ezekiel 37:9). When he speaks, the breath of God enters them, and the valley becomes a vast army.
Ezekielโs voice invited the life of God into a situation of death.
Your Voice Matters More Than You Think
Throughout Scripture, your voice is often connected to the miracle you need.
When Zechariah doubted the angelโs announcement that his wife Elizabeth would miraculously conceive John the Baptist, he was struck temporarily silent until the child was born (Luke 1:20). Perhaps heaven did not want unbelieving words interfering with the miracle.
The Bible repeatedly reminds us of the power carried in our speech. โThe tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.โ (Proverbs 18:21). Our words do not just describe our worldโthey help shape it.
James tells us that the tongue steers life like the rudder of a ship (James 3:4โ5). Solomon says โthrough the blessing of the upright a city is exaltedโ (Proverbs 11:11). Jesus Himself healed people โwith a wordโ (Matthew 8:8). He taught that if we โsay to this mountain, โGo, throw yourself into the sea,โ and do not doubtโฆ it will be doneโ (Mark 11:23).
Jehoshaphatโs praise released divine ambushes against Israelโs enemies (2 Chronicles 20:22). The shout of Israel brought down the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6:20). Even โfrom the lips of children and infants you have ordained praiseโ that silences the enemy (Psalm 8:2).
Yet the opposite is also true. The fearful report of the spies caused an entire generation to miss the Promised Land (Numbers 14:1โ4).
Again and again, our voices are tied to our destinies.
Words and the Architecture of Creation
Why are our words so powerful?
I may not fully understand the why, but Scripture clearly reveals the what.
Jesus came as โthe Wordโ (John 1:14). The universe itself was created through Godโs spoken command (Genesis 1:3). And even now, Christ sustains all things โby his powerful wordโ (Hebrews 1:3).
Word is woven into the very structure of creation. God is a speaking God, and His world responds to His voice.
So when we align our words with His truth, we cooperate with the design of the universe. When our mouths fill with unbelief, fear, or grumbling, we are resisting one of the core ways God works.
No wonder Jesus warned that we will give account for โevery empty wordโ we speak (Matthew 12:36). Thankfully there is always grace when we repentโsomething I personally need often!
But poison and fresh water cannot flow from the same spring (James 3:11). Our mouths must be trained for Kingdom activity.
Speak to Your Valley
Today, be like Ezekiel.
You may be standing in a valley that looks hopelessโdead dreams, dry opportunities, impossible circumstances. But heaven may be waiting for your voice.
Cry out to God honestly like the psalmists did. Pour out your heart if you must. But by the end of your prayer, turn your voice toward Godโs promises. Speak life. Declare His faithfulness. Prophesy His purposes.
When the word of the Lord meets a believing voice, dry valleys can become armies of opportunity.
Your valley may simply be waiting for you to speak.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
Today I declare that life flows from my words because โthe tongue has the power of life and deathโ and I choose life (Proverbs 18:21). I align my speech with Godโs truth and not fear, knowing that faith-filled words can move mountains (Mark 11:23). My life is steered toward Godโs purposes as I surrender my tongue to Him like the rudder of a ship (James 3:4โ5). I release praise that silences the enemy and establishes Godโs victory in my circumstances (Psalm 8:2). I speak blessing over my city and my world because the blessing of the upright exalts a city (Proverbs 11:11). I believe that the same God who raised dry bones into a mighty army can breathe life into every dead place around me (Ezekiel 37:9โ10).
