Positioned for the Whisper

Positioned for the Whisper

โ€œThe Lord said, โ€˜Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.โ€™ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, โ€˜What are you doing here, Elijah?โ€™โ€

1 Kings 19:11โ€“13 (NIVUK)

There are moments in our walk with God when everything feels loud except Him.

Elijah had just seen fire fall from heaven. He had outrun chariots. He had confronted kings. Yet here he wasโ€”exhausted, disillusioned, hiding in a cave. Twice he positioned himself before the Lord, and twice God asked the piercing question: โ€œWhat are you doing here, Elijah?โ€ (1 Kings 19:9,13).

The first time, Elijah answered out of pain. The second time, after the wind, the earthquake, and the fire had passed, he heard the whisperโ€”and everything shifted. Clarity came. Instruction followed. Destiny resumed.

Sometimes it takes a while to position yourself to hear clearly.

There are seasons when heaven appears silent. Indeed, there are times when God is quiet, and we must learn to navigate those sacred silences. But often, God is speakingโ€”weโ€™re just not quite positioned to hear.

Weariness can be too loud. Bitterness can muffle clarity. Trauma, confusion, self-pity, irritationโ€”these form a kind of spiritual interference. Add to that the noise of constant news cycles, political overdosing, endless scrolling, or even friendships that normalise compromise, and itโ€™s no wonder the whisper feels distant.

The issue is rarely that God has stopped speaking. Itโ€™s that our inner world has become crowded.

So what do we do? We move. We reposition.

Fasting is not religious punishment; it is strategic restraint. When we humble ourselves and deny the flesh, spiritual sensitivity increases. Jesus said, โ€œWhen you fastโ€ฆโ€ (Matthew 6:16), not if. There is clarity that comes when appetite is subdued and spirit rises.

Increase your intake of the Word. โ€œFaith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christโ€ (Romans 10:17). Faith is often the wavelength on which God speaks. The more immersed you are in Scriptureโ€”through study, long-form reading, meditationโ€”the clearer the frequency becomes.

Press into the Spirit. Paul said, โ€œThe one who speaks in a tongue edifies themselvesโ€ (1 Corinthians 14:4). There is a strengthening, a building up, that occurs when you pray beyond your understanding. Jude urges us to be โ€œbuilding yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spiritโ€ (Jude 1:20). That is repositioning language.

These disciplines still the internal winds of striving, shame, fear, and boredom. They wash away the toxic layer that dulls discernment.

But letโ€™s go deeper.

Sometimes we donโ€™t hear because we donโ€™t want to. There may be something specific God has already said: Forgive that person. Give generously. Let go of that habit. Share your faith. Step into that calling. And if we resist in one area, we can gradually numb ourselves in all areas. Disobedience in one corner spreads spiritual blindness across the whole heart.

Before we know it, we feel spiritually dull.

The remedy? Return to the last clear word.

Revisit prophetic promises. Re-read the journal entry. Go back to the instruction you parked. Ask honestly: โ€œLord, am I avoiding something Youโ€™ve asked of me?โ€ Scripture promises, โ€œIf any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask Godโ€ฆ and it will be given to youโ€ (James 1:5). But James also urges us to ask โ€œwithout doubtingโ€ (James 1:6). That means willing obedience. Wholehearted expectation.

Elijah repositioned himself near the whisper. When he did, heaven spoke clearly. Kings were named. Prophets were appointed. The future was secured.

If you feel like God is mumblingโ€”reposition. If He seems quietโ€”increase your focus through spiritual discipline. If lifeโ€™s layers have created distanceโ€”wash them away in repentance, prayer, and renewed hunger.

Stand on the mountain again. Pull your cloak over your face in reverence. Lean toward the whisper.

Your Father loves you. He knows you. And He has much to say.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I stand positioned in the presence of the Lord, confident that He speaks to me (1 Kings 19:11โ€“13). I ask for wisdom without doubting, and I receive it generously from my Father (James 1:5โ€“6). Faith rises in me as I hear and meditate on the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). As I pray in the Spirit, I build myself up in my most holy faith (Jude 1:20; 1 Corinthians 14:4). I humble myself before God, knowing He will lift me up in due time (James 4:10). I declare that my sheep-like heart hears the voice of my Shepherd, and I follow Him with clarity and obedience (John 10:27).
