Making Room For The Dove

Making Room For The Dove

In Genesis 8, Noah releases a dove three times to test the condition of the world after the flood. Each release tells a story. The first time, the dove returns quicklyโ€”there is no place to land. The second time, it brings back an olive leafโ€”a sign of hope, but still no lasting rest. The third time, it does not return, because the earth is finally ready for habitation.

The dove has always been a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Just as Noahโ€™s dove searched for a resting place, the Spirit searches for hearts where He can truly dwell. Many of us experience moments of His presence, yet they are fleetingโ€”a sense of peace in a service, a gentle nudge in prayer, a song that stirs us. But often, like that first and second flight, the Spirit finds only partial spaceโ€”waters of busyness, distraction, sin, or religious routine still cover the ground of our hearts.

Visitation is good, but God longs for habitation. He doesnโ€™t want to be an occasional guest; He wants to make His home with us. For that to happen, the โ€œwatersโ€ must recede. We must surrender our crowded schedules, lay down hidden idols, and silence competing voices. Emptying ourselves is not about losing life but making room for true lifeโ€”the life of God within.

When Noahโ€™s world was finally ready, the dove stayed. When our hearts are truly yielded, the Spirit doesnโ€™t just visitโ€”He abides. Today, ask yourself:ย Is there room for the Dove?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, forgive me for filling my life with so much that there is little room for You. Help me let the waters recede. I choose to surrender, to make space, and to invite You to dwellโ€”not just visitโ€”in me.

I surrender my will, my plans, and my desires to the Lord, for His ways are higher than my ways and His thoughts higher than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). I lay down striving and choose to remain in Him, knowing that apart from Christ I can do nothing (John 15:5).

I abide in His love, for Jesus said, โ€œIf you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruitโ€ (John 15:5). As I surrender daily, His peace rules my heart and His Spirit leads my steps.
