Lord, Help My Unbelief
“I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” — Mark 9:24 (NIV)
There is something incredibly honest about the prayer of the father in Mark 9.
Jesus had just told him,
“Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23, NIV). Immediately, the man cried out, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24, NIV).
I love that prayer because it doesn’t pretend.
“Jesus, I believe—but there are still places in me that struggle to believe. Help me.”
Perhaps that’s a prayer we all need to pray from time to time.
We live in a world that constantly tells us to believe only what we can see, measure and prove. Seeing is believing. Facts are important. Wisdom matters. We should never abandon truth or common sense. But as followers of Jesus, we are also called to live by faith.
Paul says,
“We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NIV).
The danger is that we can become so immersed in the atmosphere around us that it begins to shape the atmosphere within us. Fear can become normal. Cynicism can become normal. Unbelief can become normal, and without realising it, we can begin looking at everything through our natural eyes rather than learning to see our circumstances through the truth of God’s Word.
What is shaping your expectation of what God can do?
Faith isn’t something we simply switch on when we need a miracle. It needs cultivating.
A seed may be tiny, but it contains incredible potential. Jesus taught that even faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish extraordinary things (Matthew 17:20). But seeds need soil. They need water. They need protection. They need time to grow. In the same way, our faith needs to be continually planted in the soil of God’s Word.
Romans 10:17 says,
“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (NIV).
That’s why what we continually listen to matters. What we meditate on matters. What we allow to dominate our thoughts matters.
If we’re constantly feeding on fear, eventually fear will influence our expectations. But when we fill our hearts with the promises, character and faithfulness of God, our perspective begins to change.
Perhaps this is why Paul’s prayer in Ephesians is so powerful. He prayed that believers would receive “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” (Ephesians 1:17, NIV).
Notice the goal. Knowing Him better.
Faith isn’t ultimately about learning how to manipulate spiritual principles to get the outcome we want. Faith is about knowing God—knowing His character, trusting His Word and becoming increasingly confident in who He is.
Paul goes on to pray that they would know “his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Ephesians 1:19, NIV). That same passage points us to the resurrection power of God demonstrated in Christ.
What a thought!
The Holy Spirit wants to take truth that we have understood with our minds and make it living revelation in our hearts. So perhaps today, don’t simply pray, “God, increase my faith.” Pray Paul’s prayer.
“Holy Spirit, give me wisdom and revelation. Help me know Jesus better. Open the eyes of my heart. Take what I know in my head and make it reality in my spirit.”
And when you encounter the places where doubt remains, don’t run from God. Run towards Him.
“Lord, I believe. But help my unbelief.”
That’s not a prayer of failure. It’s a prayer of surrender—and Jesus knows exactly what to do with it.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I choose to live by faith and not merely by what I can see [2 Corinthians 5:7]. My faith is being strengthened as I hear and meditate on the Word of Christ [Romans 10:17]. I ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and revelation so that I may know Jesus more deeply [Ephesians 1:17]. The eyes of my heart are being enlightened to understand the hope and power I have in Christ [Ephesians 1:18–19]. I bring my doubts honestly to Jesus and trust Him to strengthen my faith [Mark 9:24]. I trust God’s character, His Word and His purposes, even when I cannot yet see the outcome [Proverbs 3:5–6].
