Leave The Light On
โIn Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.โ โ John 1:4-5
A while ago, our neighbourhood decided to hold a scarecrow festival for Halloween. Families decorated the fronts of their homes with scary displays and eerie creations for everyone to walk around and admire. To be honest, Iโve never enjoyed Halloween. Usually, I would simply turn off all the lights and pretend nobody was home.
But this time, the Holy Spirit challenged me.
Instead of hiding away, I decided to shine the light of Jesus from my humble little home. I silhouetted a cross in my window and displayed the words of John 1:4 for everyone passing by to see: โIn Him was life, and the life was the light of menโ (John 1:4).
Iโll be honest with youโI donโt always find it easy walking up to strangers and talking about Jesus. Sometimes fear, insecurity, or awkwardness can creep in. But the Lord reminded me that there are countless creative ways we can shine His light into the darkness.
Jesus said, โYou are the light of the worldโฆ let your light shine before othersโ (Matthew 5:14-16). Notice He didnโt say, โTry to become light.โ He said you are light. Why? Because Christ lives in you. The Holy Spirit inside you carries resurrection power, hope, peace, and truth to a world desperate for answers.
Sometimes shining looks like preaching boldly. Other times it looks like hospitality, generosity, encouragement, creativity, kindness, or simply refusing to hide your faith. St. Francis of Assisi famously said, โPreach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.โ While we must never be ashamed to speak the name of Jesus, our lives should already be radiating Him before we even open our mouths.
The darkness in our world is real. Fear, confusion, depression, division, and hopelessness seem to surround many people. Yet the answer has never changed. Jesus is still the Light of the World.
Isaiah prophetically declared, โArise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the Lord will arise over youโ (Isaiah 60:1-2).
This is not the hour for the Church to retreat in fear. This is the hour to arise and shine.
So leave the light on.
Your neighbours, your workplace, your family, and your community need to know there is a Light that darkness cannot overcomeโand His name is Jesus.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I declare that Jesus, the Light of the World, shines brightly through my life (John 8:12). I am the light of the world, and I will not hide the light God has placed within me (Matthew 5:14-16). The darkness cannot overcome the light of Christ in me (John 1:5). I arise and shine because the glory of the Lord rests upon my life (Isaiah 60:1-2). God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind to boldly reflect Jesus to others (2 Timothy 1:7). Through the Holy Spirit, I will creatively and courageously share the hope of Christ wherever I go (Acts 1:8).
