How To Inherit The Earth!

How To Inherit The Earth!

One of my favourite promises in the Beatitudes is this one โ€“ if you want to inherit, be MEEK.

Matthew 5:3-10

โ€œBlessed are the MEEK for they shall inherit the earthโ€

W. E. Vine writes: โ€œMeekness is a temper of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good and therefore without disputing and resisting.โ€

The Greek word for meekness literally means โ€œstrength under control.โ€ Meekness describes a wild stallion who was tamed and taught to be ridden. Meekness is a willingness to be governed. A submissive attitude toward authority and circumstances.

I love this little story about meekness:

Taylor University is a Christian college in Indiana. Years ago, they were pleased to learn that an African student, Sam, was going to be enrolling in their school. This was before it was commonplace for international students to come to the U.S. to study. He was a bright young man with great promise, and the school felt honoured to have him. When he arrived on campus, the President of the University took him on a tour, showing him all the dorms. When the tour was over, the President asked Sam where he would like to live. The young man replied, โ€œIf there is a room that no one wants, give that room to me.โ€ The President turned away in tears. Over the years he had welcomed thousands of Christian men and women to the campus, and none had ever made such a request.

โ€œIf there is a room that no one wants, give that room to me.โ€ Thatโ€™s the kind of meekness Jesus talks about in the Beatitudes.

If there is a job that no one wants to do, Iโ€™ll do that job.
If thereโ€™s a kid that no one wants to eat lunch with, Iโ€™ll eat with that kid.
If thereโ€™s a piece of toast thatโ€™s burnt, Iโ€™ll take that piece.
If thereโ€™s a parking space thatโ€™s far away from the church, Iโ€™ll park in that space.
If thereโ€™s a service time thatโ€™s less convenient for people, Iโ€™ll worship at that service.
If thereโ€™s a hardship someone has to endure, Iโ€™ll take that hardship.
If thereโ€™s a sacrifice someone needs to make, Iโ€™ll make that sacrifice.

Lord, help us to be meek, that we would inherit all you have for us!

I declare that as I walk in meekness, I am blessed! For the meek shall inherit the earth, and they will delight in the abundance of peace (Psalm 37:11, Matthew 5:5). I do not seek my own way, but I surrender to the will of the Lord, knowing that He lifts up the humble and gives grace to the lowly (James 4:6).

Meekness is not weakness, but strength under control. Just as Jesus, my Saviour, was meek and lowly in heart, I choose to walk in His example, displaying gentleness, patience, and wisdom in all I do (Matthew 11:29).
