Hope In The Shaking

Hope In The Shaking

โ€œOnce more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavensโ€ฆ so that what cannot be shaken may remain.โ€ โ€” Hebrews 12:26โ€“27 (NIV)

We are living in a time of shaking โ€” a time when both the foundations and the facades are being tested. On the surface, it seems turbulent. Beneath the surface, something deeper is taking place.

In January 2025, Carey Nieuwhof released sobering data: one-third of pastors are considering quitting. Compared to a decade ago, pastoral well-being has plummeted across every measure โ€” spiritual, emotional, physical, relational. Burnout risk is now at 40%, a staggering jump from just 11% in 2015. These arenโ€™t just numbers; they are the stories of weary shepherds, cracked vessels pouring out more than they have left.

And yet โ€” in this same season โ€” the Bible Society reports a quiet but profound revival sweeping through the UK and beyond. Where many had predicted the slow death of Christianity, something entirely unexpected is breaking through. Churches are growing. Young people are leading. Pentecostal and Catholic communities are thriving. Over two million more people are attending church than six years ago. A quiet flame is catching across the land.

How can both of these things be true?

The answer lies in the nature of Godโ€™s shaking. Hebrews 12 tells us that God shakes not to destroy but to reveal what cannot be shaken โ€” His unshakable Kingdom. He is exposing what is weak so it can be healed, and surfacing what is hidden so it can shine.

This shaking is mercy. It is painful, yes โ€” but it is purposeful. The weariness of leaders is not evidence of Godโ€™s absence, but a call to deeper dependence. The rise in burnout is not the death of the church, but a refining fire to bring us back to first love.

Meanwhile, the Spirit is moving โ€” not with hype, but with hunger. Not with noise, but with depth. In house churches, cathedrals, youth rooms, and quiet prayer circles, God is reawakening hearts. The next generation isnโ€™t walking away; theyโ€™re stepping up. The Church isnโ€™t dying โ€” itโ€™s being reborn.

Reflection:

  • What is God shaking in your own life?
  • Are there things youโ€™ve relied on that are being exposed as fragile?
  • What unshakable things is He calling you to hold onto?

Prayer: Lord, in this shaking, help me to see You clearly. Strip away what is temporary. Strengthen what is eternal. Heal the weary, especially our pastors and leaders. And let me be part of the quiet revival You are stirring in this land. In Jesusโ€™ name, amen.

Takeaway Thought: The shaking is not the end โ€” it is the beginning. What is falling away is making room for what cannot be shaken.
