Grace For The Body

Grace For The Body

โ€œBut to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.โ€

Ephesians 4:7, 11โ€“13 NIVUK

One of the great mysteries of the church is that Christ has chosen to reveal His fullness through all of us together. None of us carries the whole measure of His wisdom, love, or strength. Instead, Jesus gives each of us a measure of His graceโ€”unique, necessary, and powerful when released.

Paul tells us that some are called into the offices of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, or teacher. But noticeโ€”grace has been given to each one of us. Even if you donโ€™t carry the office, you still carry a measure of apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral, or teaching grace. This means you were created to express Christโ€™s life in a particular way.

Apostolic people see the world through the lens of mission. The word โ€œapostleโ€ literally means sent one. Apostolic grace stirs innovation, fresh vision, and pioneering faith to take new ground for Godโ€™s kingdom.

Prophetic people carry the burden of encounter. They long for us not just to know about God but to actually experience Him. They awaken the church to hear His voice and live in His power.

Evangelistic people overflow with passion to tell the good news. In the ancient world, an evangelist proclaimed that a war had been won. Today, evangelists burn to tell the victory of Jesus, compelling the lost to come home.

Pastoral people embody care. They shepherd hearts, walk with people in pain, and nurture the flock of God with patience and tenderness.

Teaching people are builders of understanding. They open the Scriptures, explain the ways of God, and help the church stand strong on truth.

Hereโ€™s the beauty: the church was never meant to run on one or two of these graces. All five are essential to the health of the body of Christ. Imagine trying to drive a car with only one cylinder firingโ€”it sputters, struggles, and never reaches its potential. In the same way, the church needs all five graces alive, flowing, and celebrated.

So the question becomes: Do you know which grace you carry? When you discover it, lean into it. Donโ€™t try to be what youโ€™re not, and donโ€™t pressure others to be like you. The body flourishes through unity, not uniformity.

When apostles pioneer, prophets awaken, evangelists proclaim, pastors nurture, and teachers ground us in truth, something powerful happensโ€”we all begin to grow into maturity. Together, we reveal Jesus to the world, attaining to the full measure of Christ.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for giving grace to every member of Your body. Show me the grace Youโ€™ve given me, and help me to walk in it faithfully. Teach me to honour the gifts of others, and let us, together, reveal Your fullness to the world. Amen.
