God Will Never Fail You
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people.” Psalm 118:8 (NLT)
Do you struggle to trust people?
Perhaps you’ve been hurt, betrayed or disappointed. Someone you trusted let you down, and now a little voice inside says, “Never trust anyone again.” But while people will sometimes disappoint us, there is a vital distinction we need to make: people can be loved and trusted appropriately, but they were never designed to be our ultimate anchor.
Why? Because people are human. We are imperfect. We make mistakes. We say things we shouldn’t say. We make promises we can’t keep. Sometimes we fail others even when we never intended to.
But God is different.
Your Unshakeable Anchor
The Message puts Psalm 118:8 like this:
“Far better to take refuge in God than trust in people;
Far better to take refuge in God than trust in celebrities.” Psalm 118:8 (MSG).
That doesn’t mean we should become suspicious of everyone or refuse to build meaningful relationships. Scripture actually calls us to love one another, carry one another’s burdens and walk together in community (Galatians 6:2; Hebrews 10:24–25).
But there is a difference between trusting someone and making someone your source.
People were never meant to carry the weight of your identity, security, future or hope. Only God can carry that.
When people fail you, God remains faithful.
When circumstances change, God remains constant.
When your plans collapse, God’s character doesn’t.
God Cannot Lie
One of the most comforting truths about God’s character is that He cannot lie.
“God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:19 (NLT).
What God says, He means.
What God promises, He is able to fulfil.
His Word isn’t dependent upon His mood. His character doesn’t change with circumstances.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” Hebrews 13:8 (NLT).
You can build your life upon that.
Imagine if every promise God made was backed by the full weight of His unchanging nature. That’s exactly what we have in Scripture. God is not merely someone who makes promises. He is a God whose very nature makes Him trustworthy.
Know His Name
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through names that communicate His character.
He is our Father (Matthew 6:9).
He is our Saviour (Titus 2:13).
He is our Healer (Exodus 15:26).
He is our Shepherd (Psalm 23:1).
He is our Provider (Philippians 4:19).
He is our Refuge (Psalm 46:1).
He is our Peace (Ephesians 2:14).
The more we discover who God is, the easier it becomes to trust what He says.
Faith isn’t pretending that life will never disappoint us.
Faith is knowing that even when life disappoints us, God remains faithful.
Put Your Weight on Him
Perhaps you’ve placed too much expectation on another person to meet a need only God can meet.
Perhaps you’ve allowed someone else’s failure to distort your view of God.
Today, shift your anchor.
People may change.
Circumstances may change.
Feelings may change.
But God does not change.
“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise” Hebrews 10:23 (NLT).
You can trust Him.
When you don’t know what to do, trust Him.
When you don’t understand, trust Him.
When someone lets you down, run to Him.
When the future feels uncertain, anchor yourself in Him.
Your life doesn’t need to be anchored to perfect people.
It needs to be anchored to a perfectly faithful God.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I choose to make God my refuge and my ultimate source rather than placing my security in people (Psalm 118:8). I trust God because He cannot lie, change His mind or fail to fulfil His promises (Numbers 23:19). I hold tightly to my hope because God is faithful to keep every promise He has made (Hebrews 10:23). I know that Jesus Christ is unchanging, yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The Lord is my Shepherd, so I have everything I truly need (Psalm 23:1). I trust God with all my heart and refuse to depend only on my own understanding; I acknowledge Him in every area of my life, and He directs my paths (Proverbs 3:5–6).
