God Does Not Fill Comfortable Churches

God Does Not Fill Comfortable Churches

โ€œBlessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.โ€ โ€” Matthew 5:6 (NIV)

God Will Not Force-Feed You

He will not force-feed His presence to a disinterested Church.

We are invited to ask. To seek. To stand before heaven and cry: โ€œYour Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven! Stretch forth Your hand! Move among us! Revive us again!โ€

We must position ourselves to receive.

David longed to build God a house. Solomon inherited that longing and built the Temple. When the Temple was completed, the glory of God flooded the place. But the glory was preceded by desire.

Jesus Himself burned with zeal for His Fatherโ€™s house. That holy longing ultimately led Him to build the greatest temple history has ever known โ€” the Church itself.

It was longing stronger than fear, stronger than suffering and stronger than death that carried Christ to the Cross, so that you and I might become a dwelling place for the Spirit of God.

And so there is nothing more dangerous than a smug church. A content church. A church proud of its size, activity and reputation, yet no longer desperate for God.

Jesus warned the church in Revelation:

โ€œBecause you are lukewarmโ€”neither hot nor coldโ€”I am about to spit you out of my mouth.โ€ โ€” Revelation 3:16 (NIV)

The tragedy of thinking: โ€œWeโ€™re fine. We have enough.โ€

Enough meetings. Enough worship. Enough Christianity to feel comfortable.

That kind of contentment throws a dull duvet over prayer meetings and slowly drains passion from the altar.

We need a people who will rise up with longing again. A people unwilling to settle for decent services, polished worship and interesting sermons. A people who will contend until the glory of God covers the Church with the magnificence of heaven once more.

That is where revival begins.

Overflow with Hunger

History repeatedly shows us that awakening begins with longing.

Evan Roberts cried out in the Welsh revival: โ€œBend me! Bend me!โ€

In the Hebrides Revival, elderly saints travailed in prayer until heaven broke in and entire communities were shaken by the presence of God.

Again and again, longing becomes revival.

Abraham longed for God and built altars. Elijahโ€™s longing drew him back to the mountain of God. Joshua lingered in the Tent of Meeting because he could not bear to leave Godโ€™s presence. Moses pitched a tent outside the camp to meet with God face to face.

David longed for a dwelling place for God. Solomon built one. Jesus disappeared into the Temple as a boy because He burned for His Fatherโ€™s business. Even during His ministry years, Christ continually withdrew to lonely places to pray.

Longing always creates space for encounter.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I will hunger and thirst for the presence of God above comfort, routine or religious familiarity (Matthew 5:6). My heart will remain passionate, tender and desperate for the glory of God to dwell among His people again (Psalm 84:1-2). I will seek the Lord earnestly and position my life to receive fresh encounters with His Spirit (Jeremiah 29:13). I refuse to become lukewarm, spiritually dull or content without the manifest presence of God (Revelation 3:16). The fire upon the altar of my life will continue burning as I pursue God daily in prayer, worship and surrender (Leviticus 6:12-13). I will build space for encounter by lingering in Godโ€™s presence and cultivating holy longing within my heart (Exodus 33:11). Revival fire will begin in hungry hearts that cry out for heaven to invade earth once again (Habakkuk 3:2).
