Delight Yourself In The Lord

Delight Yourself In The Lord

โ€œDelight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.โ€ โ€” Psalm 37:4

A Promise Worth Living By

I want to share with you a promise that I have lived by and seen fulfilled time and time again: Psalm 37:3โ€“6.

โ€œTrust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.โ€ (Psalm 37:3โ€“6, ESV)

There is something beautiful here. This is not a promise to simply demand whatever we want from God. It is an invitation into relationship, trust and alignment.

Trust Him. Do good. Delight in Him. Commit your way to Him.
And then watch what He does.

When our hearts become captivated by Jesus, something wonderful happens: our desires begin to change. We don’t merely ask God to fulfil our dreams; we invite Him to shape our dreams so that they increasingly reflect His heart.

The Electric Violin

Iโ€™m a violinist and I have a beautiful wooden, warm sounding violin which Iโ€™ve had since I was young, but Iโ€™ve always wanted an electric violin.

Whilst my husband and I were out and about I stumbled across this beautiful wooden electric violin. It looked and sounded beautiful, but the price tag was scarily high.

I couldnโ€™t stop thinking about it once Iโ€™d seen it so I started to google to see if it was any cheaper online.

A few days later, my husband came to me and said, โ€œI really feel God wants you to have that violin, order it online and Godโ€™ll pay for it.โ€ Sure enough before the violin arrived the money came to pay for it.

This is just one of many where God has blessed me with the desires of my heart.

Now, I’m not sharing that story to suggest that God is a divine credit card or that every desire will automatically be fulfilled exactly as we imagine. I’m sharing it because God is a good Father who delights in blessing His childrenโ€”and He knows how to surprise us with His goodness.

Jesus said, โ€œIf you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!โ€ (Matthew 7:11).

Delight Before Desire

Perhaps there is something you’ve been praying about for years. Don’t allow disappointment to steal your delight in God.

Delight in Him, not merely in what He can give you.

Trust His wisdom.
Commit your dreams to His hands.
Let His Word shape your desires, and then dare to believe that your Father is good.

Sometimes His answer will be yes.
Sometimes it will be wait.
Sometimes He will give you something far better than what you originally imagined.
But whatever He does, you can trust His heart.

โ€œCommit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will actโ€ (Psalm 37:5).

So today, bring Him your dreams. Bring Him your desires. Bring Him the things you’ve almost stopped believing for. Lay them at His feetโ€”and then delight yourself in Him.

Your Father knows. Your Father cares. Your Father is a good Father.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I trust the Lord and choose to do good; I will remain faithful in every season (Psalm 37:3). I delight myself in the Lord, and I trust Him to shape and fulfil the desires of my heart according to His goodness and wisdom (Psalm 37:4). I commit my way to the Lord and trust Him to act on my behalf (Psalm 37:5). I believe my heavenly Father delights to give good gifts to His children, and I approach Him with confidence (Matthew 7:11). I seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness, trusting Him with everything I need (Matthew 6:33). I know that God is able to do immeasurably more than I can ask or imagine, according to His power at work within me (Ephesians 3:20).

When Spirit & Word Collide

In this book, Jarrod begins to challenge, inspire and provoke us about how Spirit and Word can come together as never before. How lives can be built on both power and principle โ€“ how churches can embrace both glory and good organisation โ€“ and how the dynamics of the prophetic can be more greatly embraced, and yet the Church can also grow in discipleship and influence.
