Be A Watercarrier

Relationships are among the most beautiful gifts God gives us—and also some of the most demanding. They can lift us, shape us, and carry us into purpose, or they can wound us deeply when mishandled. Scripture doesn’t deny the reality of conflict, but it does show us a higher way through it. “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs” (Proverbs 10:12). This is not denial; it is discipleship. Love chooses to protect rather than provoke, to heal rather than inflame.

It’s often said that if conflict were a fire, some people carry petrol while others carry water. Some escalate situations with careless words, assumptions, and half-truths. Others quietly pour grace, patience, and wisdom onto the flames. Today, heaven invites us to ask a simple question: What am I carrying?

Proverbs is unflinching about the damage caused by strife. Among the seven things the Lord hates is “a person who stirs up conflict in the community” (Proverbs 6:16–19). God takes unity seriously because He loves people deeply. Sowing suspicion, offence, or division may feel small in the moment, but it carries devastating long-term fruit.

As a church leader, I walk with hundreds of people each week. Over time, I’ve noticed a familiar pattern: a relationship that was once warm grows suddenly cold. A little gentle enquiry often reveals the same root—someone else has spoken unwisely. A comment here. An accusation there. A slanted story passed along. Offence has been sown where no direct wrongdoing ever occurred. Scripture calls this out plainly. God hates it because it wounds hearts and fractures families.

I’ve sat in the painful space of mediation between good people who have fallen out—not because of personal harm, but because gossip was allowed to take root. Months of listening to accusation without ever following Jesus’ clear instruction to “go and be reconciled” (Matthew 5:23–24) hardened hearts. By the time truth arrived, offence had already built a wall. Relationships were shipwrecked on the rocks of lies—all because love was replaced by listening ears that failed to guard the heart (Proverbs 4:23).

We are never neutral in these moments. We are either bridges or wedges. Either we help people understand one another, or we amplify misunderstanding. Darkness thrives in corridors and corners, but love brings conversations into the light (Ephesians 5:11–13). Ask. Clarify. Go to the source. Speak well—or say nothing at all. When you do, you don’t just bless others; you build healthier churches, stronger friendships, and a more Christlike witness.

Choose today to be a unity creator. Be a water carrier. Let love cover.

I choose love that covers and does not stir conflict, for the love of God has been poured into my heart by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). I guard my heart diligently, knowing it is the wellspring of life, and I refuse offence a resting place (Proverbs 4:23). My words are full of grace and build others up, bringing healing rather than harm (Ephesians 4:29). I pursue peace and make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). I walk in wisdom toward others, speaking truth in love and refusing gossip and slander (Ephesians 4:15; Proverbs 6:16–19). I am a peacemaker, and I am called a child of God (Matthew 5:9).
