Ask
Some time ago, my family and I stayed at a hotel that had a bold promise: โWe guarantee you a good night’s sleepโor your money back.โ
Now, Iโm usually a great sleeper, so I didnโt think much of it. But this time, we happened to be staying directly opposite Big Ben in Londonโand as you may know, Big Ben chimes every fifteen minutes.
To be fair, the hotel did have two sets of double-glazed windows. But one of them wasnโt shutting properly. So, my โguaranteed good nightโs sleepโ turned into a long, chiming night of broken rest.
My husband was skeptical when I said we should ask for a refund. After all, it wasnโt the hotelโs fault that Big Ben chimed throughout the night!
But, I always say, โIf you donโt ask, you donโt get.โ
So, I explained to the hotel staff that the broken window and Big Benโs constant chiming made it impossible to sleep. To my surprise, they honored their guaranteeโwe got our money back.
That moment reminded me of something Jesus said inย Matthew 7:7:
โAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.โ
Sometimes we hold back from asking Godโthinking He has bigger concerns, or assuming He already knows what we need, so why bother?
But Jesus wants us to ask. Not just once, but persistently.
The Passion Translation ofย Matthew 7:8ย says it beautifully:
โFor every persistent one will get what he asks for. Every persistent seeker will discover what he longs for. And everyone who knocks persistently will one day find an open door.โ
Think of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15. She cried out to Jesus to heal her daughter. At first, He didnโt respond. Then, when He did, His reply couldโve discouraged anyone. But she persisted. She didnโt walk away.
โโIt isnโt right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.โ She replied, โThatโs true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their mastersโ table.โ โDear woman,โ Jesus said to her, โyour faith is great. Your request is granted.โ And her daughter was instantly healed. Matthew 15:26-28.
Whatever your needโask. Ask boldly. Ask persistently.
God is not bothered by your asking. In fact, He invites it. Activate His promises by standing on His Word.

I will ask my Heavenly Father with boldness, seek Him diligently, and knock persistently. My God hears me when I pray, and He is faithful to respond. He is not far off or reluctantโHe delights in giving good gifts to His children.
I will not shrink back in fear or hesitation. I come with faith, knowing that when I ask, I receive; when I seek, I find; when I knock, the door opens. Delay is not denialโGod is working, and His timing is perfect. I will not grow weary or discouraged in the waiting. He is a good Father, and He meets me with grace and provision.
