Ask

Some time ago, my family and I stayed at a hotel that had a bold promise: “We guarantee you a good night’s sleep—or your money back.”

Now, I’m usually a great sleeper, so I didn’t think much of it. But this time, we happened to be staying directly opposite Big Ben in London—and as you may know, Big Ben chimes every fifteen minutes.

To be fair, the hotel did have two sets of double-glazed windows. But one of them wasn’t shutting properly. So, my “guaranteed good night’s sleep” turned into a long, chiming night of broken rest.

My husband was skeptical when I said we should ask for a refund. After all, it wasn’t the hotel’s fault that Big Ben chimed throughout the night!

But, I always say, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

So, I explained to the hotel staff that the broken window and Big Ben’s constant chiming made it impossible to sleep. To my surprise, they honored their guarantee—we got our money back.

That moment reminded me of something Jesus said in Matthew 7:7:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Sometimes we hold back from asking God—thinking He has bigger concerns, or assuming He already knows what we need, so why bother?

But Jesus wants us to ask. Not just once, but persistently.

The Passion Translation of Matthew 7:8 says it beautifully:

“For every persistent one will get what he asks for. Every persistent seeker will discover what he longs for. And everyone who knocks persistently will one day find an open door.”

Think of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15. She cried out to Jesus to heal her daughter. At first, He didn’t respond. Then, when He did, His reply could’ve discouraged anyone. But she persisted. She didn’t walk away.

““It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.” “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed. Matthew 15:26-28.

Whatever your need—ask. Ask boldly. Ask persistently.
God is not bothered by your asking. In fact, He invites it. Activate His promises by standing on His Word.

I will ask my Heavenly Father with boldness, seek Him diligently, and knock persistently. My God hears me when I pray, and He is faithful to respond. He is not far off or reluctant—He delights in giving good gifts to His children.

I will not shrink back in fear or hesitation. I come with faith, knowing that when I ask, I receive; when I seek, I find; when I knock, the door opens. Delay is not denial—God is working, and His timing is perfect. I will not grow weary or discouraged in the waiting. He is a good Father, and He meets me with grace and provision.
