Ask, Seek, Knock

Ask, Seek, Knock

โ€œAsk, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.โ€ โ€” Matthew 7:7

Ask Boldly

Some time ago, my family and I stayed in a hotel that offered an unusual guarantee: โ€œWe guarantee you a good nightโ€™s sleep. If not, weโ€™ll give you your money back.โ€

It sounded wonderfulโ€”until we discovered we were staying opposite Big Ben in London and every fifteen minutes, the bells chimed through the night. To make matters worse, one of the windows wouldnโ€™t close properly. The hotel had double glazing, but Big Ben was certainly making itself heard!

My husband was convinced there was no way we would get our money back. After all, what could the hotel possibly do about Big Ben?

But Iโ€™ve always believed: if you donโ€™t ask, you donโ€™t get!

So I spoke to the hotel, explained what had happened, and asked if they would honour their guarantee. And sure enough, they did. We received our money back.

This got me thinking about prayer.

Jesus didn’t say, โ€œThink about what you need and hope for the best.โ€ He said, โ€œAsk, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to youโ€ (Matthew 7:7).

Keep Knocking

Sometimes we hesitate to ask God. Perhaps we think our need is insignificant. Perhaps we think other people need Him more than we do. Or maybe we assume, โ€œGod already knows what I need, so I don’t need to keep asking.โ€

But Jesus specifically invites us to ask.

The Passion Translation emphasises the persistence of this invitation:

โ€œFor every persistent one will get what he asks for. Every persistent seeker will discover what he longs for. And everyone who knocks persistently will one day find an open doorโ€ (Matthew 7:8 TPT).

Think about the Canaanite woman who desperately wanted Jesus to heal her daughter. She cried out, persisted when it seemed Jesus wasn’t responding, and refused to walk away. Jesus eventually declared, โ€œDear woman, your faith is great. Your request is grantedโ€ (Matthew 15:28).

Her persistence wasn’t disrespectfulโ€”it was faith refusing to give up.

Maybe today you need to ask again.

Ask boldly. Seek passionately. Knock persistently. Bring your need before your Father and stand upon His promises. Biblical persistence isn’t trying to manipulate God; it’s demonstrating that we trust Him enough to keep coming.

So don’t give up praying.
Don’t stop believing.
Don’t stop knocking.

There may be a breakthrough on the other side of your persistence.

Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration

I boldly approach my heavenly Father because I know He hears me when I pray (1 John 5:14). I ask, seek, and knock with confidence, trusting the goodness of God (Matthew 7:7). I will pray continually and never give up (Luke 18:1). My faith is persistent, courageous, and anchored in God’s promises (Hebrews 10:23). I believe that God is able to do immeasurably more than I can ask or imagine according to His power working in me (Ephesians 3:20). I will not grow weary in doing good, because in due season I will reap if I do not give up (Galatians 6:9).
