Are You An Off-Road Vehicle Or A London Bus?

Are You An Off-Road Vehicle Or A London Bus?

On a recent trip to South Africa I headed out on a safari in a large 4×4 vehicle that could seat around 20 people. Now I usually drive around on safari in an every day, 2 wheel drive street car. This means that if an elephant, lion or giraffe is 500 metres away in the African bush, I have to make do with watching them through my binoculars.

On this occasion, as we headed up the rough red mud tracks on our mega-4×4 vehicle, we spotted a large heard of buffalo almost a kilometre away. One of the famed African โ€œBig Fiveโ€ it was great to see them, but they were a long way away. In all honesty, they could have been a collection of boulders had our guide not told us otherwise.

At the distance they were away from us I would have normally ignored them and moved on, but our guide had other ideas. Revving his engine and turning the steering wheel hard left, he launched off, cross country, through the African bush towards the buffalo! Down ridges, up hills, over bushes and brushland he careered, a dozen wide eyed tourists rocking wildly behind him, and he soon drew up right alongside the beautiful buffalo and some newly born calves.

The all-terrain vehicle had vastly transformed my experience of the African bush. We could go anywhere, find anything – the vehicle was built for it.

What about you? 4×4 or London Bus?

In thinking about life, your team, your church, your mind, this story raises a great cultural question: Are you a London Bus or an all-terrain vehicle, capable of adventure, flexibility, new styles and new days?

A life well lived is one that is flexible, capable of facing new situations, not brittle, scared or stuck. Are you trapped on well-worn paths built by others, or can you pioneer, flex, embrace “the new” without fear paralysing you?

“God has not given us a spirit of fear” 2 Timothy tells us. Bravery is necessary for a great life. Why don’t we call on God for bravery, boldness, fearless flexibility. We’ll enjoy God so much more if we do!

Praying all of heavens faith and strength fill you today!

I will not fear the purpose and calling God has placed on my life.
He has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Even when I feel unqualified, God has already equipped me. I was created with purpose, chosen for such a time as this.

I say yes to His call. I trust His plan. I will walk in bold obedience and I will not shrink back.
