A Kingdom Not Of This World

“My kingdom is not of this world.” — John 18:36

I’ve never really seen myself as a particularly political person, yet over recent years it has become almost impossible to avoid politics altogether. Decisions made by governments during times of crisis have affected every area of our lives. Social media has become filled with passionate opinions, heated debates, division, and outrage—not only here in the UK but across the world.

Watching it all unfold made me think deeply about Jesus and how He responded during the Roman occupation of Israel.

Jesus had every right to rule politically. In fact, many Jews expected the Messiah to rise as a military leader who would overthrow Rome and establish earthly dominance. They longed for a revolutionary king. Yet Jesus consistently resisted being pulled into political agendas because He came for something far greater.

Scripture tells us that after witnessing His miracles, people attempted to make Him king by force, but “Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by Himself” (John 6:15). Why? Because His mission was not to win political arguments but to defeat sin, death, and hell through the Cross.

When Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest… but now My kingdom is from another place” (John 18:36). Then Jesus declared, “I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth” (John 18:37).

What a powerful reminder for us today.

This does not mean Christians should ignore politics or avoid civic responsibility altogether. God absolutely calls some believers into government, leadership, and public service. We are called to pray for leaders and seek righteousness within society. But as believers, we must guard our hearts from becoming consumed, divided, angry, or spiritually distracted by earthly systems.

Jesus stayed focused on the bigger picture.

The real battle has always been spiritual.

Paul reminds us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age” (Ephesians 6:12). The Church’s greatest weapon is not outrage—it is prayer. Not political rage—but spiritual authority.

Jesus said, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18). Heaven responds when believers pray in unity.

So yes, stay informed. Yes, vote prayerfully. Yes, honour leaders and pray for governments as Scripture commands (1 Timothy 2:1-2). But above all else, stay heavenly minded.

Do not allow political division to rob you of love, unity, peace, or your witness for Christ.

We belong to another Kingdom.

And that Kingdom cannot be shaken.

I declare that my citizenship is in Heaven, and my life belongs first and foremost to the Kingdom of God (Philippians 3:20). I will not be consumed by fear, division, or anger, but I will walk in the peace and wisdom of Christ (Colossians 3:15). I recognise that my true battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual darkness, and I stand strong in God’s authority (Ephesians 6:12). I will pray faithfully for leaders and governments so that God’s righteousness and peace may prevail (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Wherever believers gather in Jesus’ name and pray in agreement, Heaven moves powerfully on earth (Matthew 18:18-20). I belong to an unshakable Kingdom, and Jesus Christ reigns forever as King of kings (Hebrews 12:28; Revelation 19:16).
