The Voices Around You

The Voices Around You

โ€œNow Sarai had borne no children for Abram. She had an Egyptian slave girl named Hagar, so Sarai said to Abram, โ€˜Please listen. Since Yahweh has kept me childless, go sleep with my maidservant. Perhaps through her I can build you a family.โ€™ Abram listened and did what Sarai asked.โ€

Genesis 16:1โ€“2 (TPT)

The story of Abram and Sarai reminds us of one of the greatest truths of life: the voices closest to us can profoundly shape our destinyโ€”for better or worse. Saraiโ€™s frustration, fear, and longing for a child led her to suggest a shortcut that was never Godโ€™s plan. Abram, instead of holding fast to Godโ€™s promise, listened to her voice, and it led to years of conflict and heartbreak.

This pattern echoes back to Eden. Adam, standing beside Eve, listened to her persuasion rather than Godโ€™s command. Throughout Scripture we see how misplaced influence leads people astrayโ€”not through enemies, but through loved ones, companions, and trusted voices.

The same dynamic is alive in our world today. The โ€œgood advice,โ€ the โ€œalternative wisdom,โ€ the pressure of peers or familyโ€”these voices can subtly pull us away from the path of God. Sometimes the influence is well-meaning, but rooted in fear, impatience, or personal ambition. Other times it is manipulative, motivated by self-interest.

If you carry influence, resources, or favor, be especially discerning. People will want to attach themselves to your journeyโ€”some because God has truly joined you together, and others because they see an opportunity for themselves. Not every voice around you is meant to guide your steps. Some may use fear, guilt, or urgency to push you into decisions. Others may resist your โ€œno,โ€ showing their real motives.

Scripture urges us to weigh the fruit of peopleโ€™s lives and test the spirits behind the counsel we receive. Are the voices around you anchored in Godโ€™s Word? Do they encourage obedience to Him, even when it is slow or costly? Or do they drive you to compromise, hurry, or to strive in your own strength?

The prophet Jeremiah once said, โ€œI sat alone because your hand was upon meโ€ (Jeremiah 15:17). Sometimes it is better to sit alone with God than to sit surrounded by voices that drown Him out. In solitude, you can hear His whisper more clearly than in the noise of competing opinions.

Check the lives around you today. They can alter your trajectory. Make sure the ones who shape your decisions are filled with Godโ€™s Spirit, grounded in His Word, and pursuing His ways. When you choose wisely, the right voices will confirm Godโ€™s promises, strengthen your faith, and keep you steady until His purposes unfold.

Today, my heart will be tuned to the voice of my Shepherd. โ€œMy sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Meโ€ (John 10:27). I will not be swayed by the noise of the world, the opinions of others, or the lies of the enemy. I will listen for the still, small voice that leads me in truth (1 Kings 19:12).

Lord, give me discernment to recognise Your whisper amid the chaos. Let Your Word be the loudest voice in my life, shaping my thoughts, guiding my choices, and anchoring my heart. I refuse to give ear to fear, doubt, or distraction. Instead, I will walk in wisdom and peace, following the voice that brings life. โ€œWhether I turn to the right or the left, my ears will hear a voice behind me, saying, โ€˜This is the way; walk in itโ€™โ€ (Isaiah 30:21).
