The Joy Of Jesus
โFixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faithโ (Hebrews 12:2, NIVUK)
Fixing Our Eyes on the Only Steady Source
Does your happiness vacillate? Does joy ebb and flowโฆ or does it mostly ebb? Do tough days get you down? And does a quick scroll through Instagram โ the wins, the holidays, the breakthroughs of others โ quietly stir comparison, disappointment, or even envy in your own heart?
I was dwelling on this the other day. What actually makes me happy? And perhaps more importantly, what am I expecting to make me happy? Where does joy truly come from in the middle of ordinary, demanding, sometimes disappointing life?
Itโs incredibly important that our joy comes from healthy places โ and just as important that we expect it to come from healthy places. Expectation quietly shapes experience. If we train our hearts to look for joy in pleasure, we will always be vulnerable on days that are not pleasure-filled. If we expect joy to come from play, purpose, travel, holidays, nice cars, retail therapy, or high-octane days full of urgency, then disappointment is inevitable when those things arenโt readily available.
None of those things are evil. In the right measure, they are small building blocks of a good life. But none of them were ever designed to carry the weight of your joy.
Iโve noticed in my own heart that I sometimes replace Jesus with purpose โ so Iโm only happy on the big, fulfilling days. Thatโs not life in all its fullness (John 10:10). I sometimes replace joy in Jesus with recreation, yet often find it doesnโt truly rest my soul. Only His presence brings deep rest (Matthew 11:28โ29). I sometimes replace satisfaction in Jesus with more stuff โ change the car, upgrade the house, buy a few โman-toysโ! But they all fall shortโฆ and eventually you run out of money long before you run out of discontent (Ecclesiastes 5:10).
There is only one steady, readily available, daily source of joy โ and His name is Jesus.
On the days when the things I own feel like clutter, when purpose feels distant, when boredom, failure, or disappointment knock at the door, He remains. If we could learn again to look unto Jesus (Hebrews 12:2), we would begin the lifelong journey of discovering everlasting joy. Trauma would be healed, purpose would find its proper place, obsessions would be humbled, and we would rediscover the pearl of great price (Matthew 13:45โ46).
Jesus did not die primarily to give us purpose, possessions, or power โ He died to give us Himself. To live in us. To radiate through us. To become the unshakeable centre of our joy.
With Jesus enthroned in the heart, joy becomes possible anywhere โ in prison like Paul and Silas (Acts 16:25), under house arrest like Paul (Philippians 4:4), exiled like John (Revelation 1:9), or wandering like Moses (Exodus 33:14). The well of His presence never runs dry.
Come back to Jesus โ and youโll find yourself coming back to joy.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I fix my eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith, and my joy is anchored in Him (Hebrews 12:2). The joy of the Lord is my strength, sustaining me in every season (Nehemiah 8:10). In His presence there is fullness of joy, and my soul is satisfied daily (Psalm 16:11). I have learned the secret of contentment because Christ strengthens me in all circumstances (Philippians 4:11โ13). Jesus gives me rest for my soul, and His yoke brings peace, not pressure (Matthew 11:28โ30). I have life in all its fullness because Christ lives in me (John 10:10; Galatians 2:20).
