Shake It Off!
โTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,โ
(Hebrews 12:1, NIVUK)
It sometimes takes a while to realise that the demeanour of our lives has changed. These things rarely arrive with a bang. They creep in quietly. A weariness of soul. A low-grade sadness. Anxiety, bitterness, irritation, or anger. They slip through small cracks in our defences, and before we know it, even our countenance has shifted. Shoulders slump. Eyes drop. Backs bend. A heaviness settles that was never meant to stay.
The moment of grace is when we notice. When we catch ourselves changing. And in that moment, we are presented with a choice: succumb, or resist.
Hebrews 12:1 is so liberating because it doesnโt only address sinโit speaks to everything that hinders. Not just what is wrong, but what is heavy. The dull duvets of backsliding that muffle Godโs voice. The irritants that disturb our rest and steal our peace. The worries that shout louder in our souls than the promises of our Saviour. God gives us permissionโno, instructionโto throw them off.
Many right now are walking through deep fatigue. The aftermath of trauma. The fallout from long battles. And while the season may be real, the weariness does not have to define us. Joy, vibrancy, and faith are not lost foreverโthey are waiting to be reclaimed.
So how do we shake off what hinders?
We begin by going after the roots of deception through Godโs Word. Scripture realigns us. The Psalms, especially, model holy self-talkโsouls talking themselves back into hope, praise, and trust (Psalm 42:5). Declare the goodness of the Lord over your life, your family, your home, and your inner world. Truth drives out lies when it is spoken aloud.
Then there is praiseโfull-throated, defiant praise. Praise looks good on you. Hard seasons often silence us, replacing lifted voices with quiet resignation. But Scripture shows us that praise is a weapon, not a reward (2 Chronicles 20:22). Shout praise at the heaviness like it is a Jericho standing in your way.
And be filledโcontinually filledโwith the Holy Spirit. Drink deeply. Let heaven saturate your inner atmosphere until fear gives way to faith and heaviness lifts into hope (Ephesians 5:18). God is not stingy with His presence.
We must also be discerning. Not everything heavy is merely emotional. Scripture reminds us that we wrestle not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). Address demonic assignments boldly and without shame. Speak life. Speak truth. Speak hope. Angels surround you. God is with you and for you. No weapon formed against you will prosper unless you allow it to stay (Isaiah 54:17).
So letโs go. Throw it off. Shake it loose. And rise again to run your race with perseverance and joy.
Believe & Confess Meditation & Declaration
I throw off everything that hinders me and I run with perseverance the race God has marked out for my life (Hebrews 12:1). The joy of the Lord is my strength, and heaviness has no permanent hold on me (Nehemiah 8:10; Isaiah 61:3). I speak to my soul and command it to hope in God, for I will yet praise Him (Psalm 42:5). I am being continually filled with the Holy Spirit, and my inner atmosphere is shifting from fear to faith (Ephesians 5:18). No weapon formed against me will prosper, and God is with me, for me, and surrounding me (Isaiah 54:17; Psalm 34:7). I rise today in strength, joy, and perseverance by the grace of God (Isaiah 40:31).
