Protect Your Heart, But Don’t Bury It

Protect Your Heart, But Don’t Bury It

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

There’s a common phrase: “Wear your heart on your sleeve.” It sounds honest, even noble. But Scripture offers something different—wisdom. It tells us to guard our hearts, not hide them, but protect them with discernment.

Jesus modeled this perfectly. John 2:24 says, “But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew all people.” He wasn’t fake or closed off. He was love embodied. But He also understood the hearts of people—how fickle and unreliable human approval can be. So He chose when and with whom to fully open His heart.

Being guarded isn’t about being cold or distant. It’s about stewardship. Your heart is precious. It holds your dreams, your callings, your pain, and your purpose. It shouldn’t be handed out carelessly or constantly exposed to criticism, manipulation, or shallow connections.

Authenticity is a virtue, but transparency is a choice. You can be real with everyone, but vulnerable with a few. That’s not fear—it’s wisdom.

So find your circle. A few people who love you fiercely—who speak truth in love, protect your name when you’re not in the room, and walk with you through fire. With them, be fully known. That’s where your heart belongs on your sleeve.

With others, walk in grace and love—but also discernment. Like Jesus, choose wisely.

Your heart is the wellspring of life. Guard it not with walls, but with wisdom. Be authentic—but let God show you when and with whom to be completely transparent.

Because the goal isn’t to be exposed—it’s to be whole.

I will guard my heart above all else, for from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23). I will not let bitterness, fear, or sin take root within me, but I will keep my heart pure, for the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8).

I will set my mind on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2), and I will hide God’s Word in my heart so that I might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11). The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

My heart belongs to the Lord, and I will love Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30).
