Get On God’s Side!

Get On God’s Side!

“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence, and asked him, ‘What message does my Lord have for his servant?’”
‭‭Joshua‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

There are moments in Scripture that shake our assumptions, and Joshua’s encounter outside Jericho is one of them. Joshua sees a heavenly warrior — many believe this was the pre-incarnate Christ — standing with a drawn sword. Joshua has just stepped into leadership after Moses, he’s leading God’s people into promise after generations of slavery and wandering, and he’s standing on the brink of Israel’s greatest military campaign so far.

So he asks the obvious question: “Are You for us, or for our enemies?” That’s the question we all ask when we face battles, challenges, and dreams — “God, are You with me? Are You backing my plan?”

And the answer from heaven shocks him:
“Neither.”
“I have not come to take sides,” the Commander essentially says, “but to take over.”

How often we forget this! We live in a world where self is king. It’s “my truth,” “my dreams,” “my journey.” And without realising it, we place ourselves at the centre of the universe and expect even God to orbit our preferences. We assume Christianity is God empowering our desires, aligning with our plans, adding His blessing to our scripts.

But the Kingdom doesn’t work like that.

God has not come to endorse your dream — He has come to invite you into His. The Promised Land was not Moses’ dream, nor Abraham’s, nor Joshua’s. It was God’s dream — unfolding across centuries, woven into generations, carried by covenant, fuelled by divine desire. And now God Himself stands with sword drawn saying, “I am here to fulfil My purpose. Joshua — fall in line with Me.”

This is the invitation to every believer: Don’t ask God to join your side. Get on His.

Reframe your life today. It’s not ultimately about what you prefer, plan, or hope for. Your calling is far more glorious: to orbit Him, to submit to His leadership, to say with Jesus, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” To echo Isaiah, “Here I am, Lord — send me.”

You are part of a story thousands of years in the making. A divine dream is unfolding in your family line, in your city, in your generation. And God is still looking for those like Joshua who will fall in reverence and ask, “What message does my Lord have for His servant?”

Today — surrender again. Worship deeply. Align joyfully.
Get on God’s side — and watch His dream unfold through your life.

Today, I lay my yes before God. My life is in His hands. My steps are ordered by Him. I declare that my heart is willing and my life is surrendered to the call of God. Like Isaiah, I say, “Here I am. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). I offer myself fully—my time, my gifts, and my obedience—for the purposes of the Lord.

I choose availability over comfort and obedience over fear. I trust that the One who calls me will equip me and go with me. “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

When Spirit & Word Collide

In this book, Jarrod begins to challenge, inspire and provoke us about how Spirit and Word can come together as never before. How lives can be built on both power and principle – how churches can embrace both glory and good organisation – and how the dynamics of the prophetic can be more greatly embraced, and yet the Church can also grow in discipleship and influence.
